Dear Select Board:
The purpose of this letter is to ask you to consider the future use of the Soldiers' Memorial Library,
a.k.a. Memorial Hall, presently being used by the school administration. Memorial Hall is on the
National Register of Historic Places. It was home for the Mansfield Public Library until 1989.
In 1898, Mansfield citizen Elizabeth F. Noble gifted the land, selected and paid for the architect, and
was the major financial contributor to the construction of the building. Her donation carried several
stipulations, one of which was that the fust floor was to be used for a public library and reading
room.
The Town of Mansfield and Mansfield Historical Society own thousands of Mansfield's historical
artifacts. Some are on display at the Copeland House. Others are at the Fisher -Richardson House. A
majority of the artifacts are in temporary storage and are not available for public viewing (see
attached examples). The collection includes photographs, books, tools, toys, furniture, and more.
The Massachusetts Historical Commission also has hundreds of artifacts that they will not return to
the town until we have a proper place to store them. We are concerned that many will be lost through
neglect and apathy, if we do not take action soon.
Like Foxboro, Easton, Sharon, and other towns, Mansfield needs a permanent place to display our
history. The Memorial Hall was designed as a library and is the proper and logical place for a Town
of Mansfield Museum.
We feel that now is the time to plan the return of Memorial Hall to its intended use as a library, a
library of Mansfield's history and a great addition to our planned cultural district.
We urge you to support our request. The Commission and Historical Society are prepared to help
with fundraising and recruiting volunteers to make a town museum a reality.
Sincerely,
Martin Conboy Kevin McNatt Lisa Piscatelli
