It is easy to find out student leaders, but we should make sure we include all groups. Teresa noted that the district has used several surveys over the last few years. She is opting not to do a new survey but to use some of the feedback from prior surveys. Therefore no survey will take place at the beginning of the year. Lauren Scher- Perhaps Teresa can focus on ideas or topics to assist younger students stay focused and provide valuable feedback. Perhaps Teresa can choose one topic for each separate meeting. Lauren also asks that Teresa keeps the school committee informed throughout the year if any hot topic arises from these meetings. Lynn Cavicchi- Make sure we circle back with students so they know that the district cares and is listening. Often we ask for feedback but never provide updates to the students. Page 3 of 5 Approved 9-25-18 Mansfield School Committee Meeting Minutes for Tuesday, September 4, 2018 Town Hall, Room 3ab Linda Fernando- Enter the meetings with a "sense of curiosity" rather than attempting to solve every issue or question that arises. Comments and questions on Student Learning: Lauren Scher- Would it be possible to expand conversations beyond cost and logistics? Perhaps it would be smart to include parents and staff to hear their thoughts or concerns. Teresa noted that this is a first round of review and based on our progress and our ability to move forward, we would certainly start to request additional feedback. Kiera O'Neil- It is important to be transparent and communicate to the public as we move forward. The district is about 50 students shy of the first day of school last year. Based on enrollment, the addition of a kindergarten teacher was beneficial. The move of a 4th grade teacher to a 3rd grade teacher was also needed. However, we have had 20+ new 4m graders enroll in the Mansfield Schools, many just last week. Class numbers are still manageable but we will monitor.
