Team Up Committee Presentation
The Team Up Committee consists of Elizabeth Clemmey, Barry Cioe, Maureen Cioe, Jack
Cooney, and Deb Medeiros. They are a group of Mansfield residents who are trying to raise
awareness about negative impacts of plastic straws on our planet, as well as, other issues
like plastic bags.
Team Up stated 500 million straws are used and discarded every day in the US. In
Mansfield alone, 38,000 straws, enough to fill 3 large trash barrels, are discarded every day.
This is even more disturbing because they are not recyclable. Plastic straws are filling
landfills, polluting our oceans and streams, and leaching toxins into jour food chain and
water supply.
Team Up is starting an initiative to work with restaurants to do the following:
• Do not offer or provide a straw by default. Allow customers to request one.
• Use plastic straws instead of plastic.
• Eliminate plastic stirrers and drink decorations.
They want Keep Mansfield Beautiful to help with this project by placing information on our
social media (website and Facebook) and providing guidance about fundraising. We told
them we would be happy to place information about this initiative on social media. We also
told them about the non-profit gift fund as a way to obtain funds.
They also submitted an article for Town Meeting to reduce plastic bag usage in town. See
details below.
Girl Scout Silver Badge Project
This Girl Scout Troop is also working with the Team Up Committee to build awareness and
reduce the use of plastic straws. They have the following goals:
• Educate the facts and harms of using plastic straws.
• Challenge people to sign the pledge to stop using plastic straws.
• Challenge people to order drinks with "no straws please'.
• Challenge people to buy metal, paper, or glass straws for home.
• Challenge people to ask restaurants to switch to metal, paper, glass, or no straws.
• Challenge people to pass this conversation forward.
They would like to have a table at the Cleanup picnic to highlight their project. We all
agreed this would be a great thing to do.
We all agreed to help in whatever way we could.
After they left, it was suggested they paint a barrel with "Last Plastic Straw" as a theme. Pat
will follow up with them.
Relay for Life Event - Pat
• As agreed at the last meeting, Keep Mansfield Beautiful will have an information table at the
Relay for Life event on June 16 from 6:00 - 9:00 at Ahern Middle School in Foxboro.
• Pat has setup a Keep Mansfield Beautiful team and will provide a link for the members so
they can join this this. Even though there is no requirement to donate, Pat started the
account with $50.00 and hoping members will donate a small amount.
Cleanup - All
• Pat has reached out to all the Precinct Captains from last year and they are going to
participate again this year.
• The banner is scheduled to be hung from April 9th - April 201h. The patch to the banner is
done and Pat will pick it up and bring to the Electric Department.
• Neil will send the flyers to Nancy for printing. Once printed, Mike H. and Martha will make
sure they are hung around town and placed in the school's e -newsletter.
• Pat is going to email all the community groups this weekend.
• We currently have 3 cases of reusable bags. For each community group, Pat will place all
the supplies in our reusable bags. As our way to help reduce plastic bags, we will hand out
our reusable bags at the picnic and give them to Mansfield Food Pantry.
• We would also like to hand them out at the Town Meeting to support the plastic bag ban.
Nancy is going to check with the Town Clerk if this would be allowed.
• Neil will begin the social media campaign for the Cleanup.
• Nancy and Mike will be filming at Cable Access next weep
• Mike will get back to us on when he will do the Litter Index, either Saturday, March 24th or
Saturday, March 31st.
• Jason needs to get the Police and EMT contact information from Neil.
• We will be looking for people with boats to clean the perimeters of Kingman Pond and
Fulton Pond. Nancy and Ana are going to send a letter to the abutting residents on whether
or not they would be interested in doing this on the day of the cleanup.
• Neil needs to fill out the State paperwork that allows us to clean Route 140 (either side, but
not the middle strip).
• Neil told us we have accident insurance from Keep Massachusetts Beautiful since we are an
affiliate.
Article for town meeting on banning plastic bags - Neil
As discussed by the Team Up committee, they created an article for the town meeting to ban
plastic bags for businesses with a square footage of 3500 or greater (Stop and Shop, Shaws,
Home Depot, etc.) and for businesses with 2 or more locations in town, regardless of square
footage (Dunkin Donuts, etc.).
All the members agreed to support this article, except Mike H. who wants to see a complete
ban on plastic bags.
Adopt -a -Spot Veteran Memorials - Neil and Martha
• There are 28 veteran memorials in town. We want to list these memorials on the town
website with information, pictures, a map, and the person/group responsible for
maintaining the site. We want to include these memorials as part of the Adopt -a -Spot
program.
• A book was written about all the veteran memorials. Martha is working off the electronic
version of the book and producing a one page summary for each memorial. Neil stated this
is very labor intensive and Martha is making great progress on this effort!
• Lou Andrews is working on obtaining pictures, medals, etc.
106 Embankment trees - Martha
• Guerrini will be spraying the trees on the embankment in the spring. Keep Mansfield
Beautiful will pay for the cost of spraying. Ana stressed the importance of doing the
spraying before the trees flowers. The buds can be on them, but if they are flowering, it is
too late to spray.
Flower Barrels - Nancy and Pat
• Nancy has solicited previous businesses and a half of them have responded. Many
businesses have requested additional barrels, which may bring our number of barrels up to
100! Pat has confirmed with Patrick Lyons that they will have at least 100 pansies available
to us.
• Nancy and Pat need to meet beforehand to count the number of usable barrels (some were
damaged and will not be used again). We will need to purchase new plastic barrels and will
use the remaining money on the Home Depot card we received from Toyota last year.
• We will prepare the barrels at the Fruit Street site on Thursday, March 22 at 4:00. We
should be able to finish, but if we do not, we will complete either the next day or Saturday.
Mike H. will pick up 12 bags of soil from Patrick Lyons. Pat has fertilizer from last year that
we will use. Nancy and Mike H. will bring a drill for creating holes in the new plastic barrels.
All should bring a hand and large shovel for mixing.
• Pat will to coordinate with DPW on placing the barrels the first week in April.
• The planting of the pansies is scheduled for the second week in April. The exact date
depends on when Patrick Lyons tells us it is safe to plant them.
Painted Barrel update - Pat
• There are two barrels in Pats basement waiting to be placed. Mr. Mehigan's 8w grade art
class barrel is a sea theme and will be placed at the intersection of Rumford Avenue and Old
Colony Road. The Mansfield Connection's Candy Land barrel will be placed in front of the
library. Pictures of these barrels were placed on Facebook, along with a thank you to the
group responsible. From now on, all newly painted barrels will be recognized on Facebook.
There are three outstanding barrels: Friends of Memorial Park (for playground), another
barrel from 8th grade art class, and a private individual.
Pat has requested DPW prime 10 more barrels for 2018.
Wellness Expo at Jordan/Jackson - Nancy and Pat
• Administration, Teachers, and Parents of Jordan Jackson have teamed together to provide a
Wellness Expo at the Jordan/Jackson School on March 15th from 6:30 - 8:00. Set up
time is 6:00. The purpose of the event is to provide a variety of resources to support the
physical and emotional well-being of elementary -aged children and their families. Our
organization was invited so we can share materials about our programs that can help
families and children get more involved in the community.
• We will be setting up an information table. We will highlight the Cleanup (Fall, Spring, and
Litter Busters) and Painted Barrel programs.
• We will bring two of the recently painted barrels from Mr. Mehigan's 8th grade art class (sea
theme) and Mansfield Connections (Candy Land theme). These barrels are currently in
Pat's basement waiting for the winter weather to end. The barrels will be transported by
Nancy's truck.
• For door prizes, we will be donating reusable bags, Cleanup t -shirts, and trash grabbers.
March Madness - Jeff
• March Madness is Thursday, March 29th from 6:00 - 8:00. Jeff is coordinating this
effort. We currently have 8 people on the team. Current and past KMB members are
playing (Jeff, Neil, Mike M., Mike H., Erik, Jason, and Dave K.). Martha's son-in-law Mark is
also playing.
• Pat, Nancy, Martha, and Ana will be at the information table.
• Arrive time should be 5:30 for table setup and basketball practicing.
• Everyone should be wearing a Cleanup t -shirt!
Xffnity program for Non -Profits - Neil
• Neil is still waiting to hear back from Xfinity on whether or not we can chose the concerts.
• Neil is not quite sure if we will go ahead with this as it is a huge commitment (6 concerts
with a minimum of 6 people), requires training, and the total amount to be received would
only be approximately $5000 - $6000 (this represents a base amount of $3,500 with a
percentage of the profits). Neil will get back to us on his decision.
Bertucci fundraisingopportunity - Nancy
• Bertucci reached out to us for using the restaurant as a fundraising activity. On Tuesday,
April 24 from 11:00 am - 9:00 pm, Bertucci's will give us a percentage of the sales if you
show them the flyer they provided Nancy.
• Nancy will distribute the flyer to us electronically and will post on Facebook.
• All members should pass along the information to friends and family.
Handicapped ramps at train station - Nancy
• Nancy showed us the design of the handicap ramps at the Train Station. There is so much
concrete in this design. When it is done, we would like to enhance the area with
landscaping and possible art work.
