Mr. Azinheira explained the request for $24,000 for a 4x4 pickup truck. He said the existing
truck is a 2001 model with 173,000 miles with significant rust on the body and will not pass
inspection when it is due in December. A replacement has been on the CIP list for three years.
Mr. Azinheira explained the $8 million request for the new DPW facility design and construction.
The preliminary design was funded through CIP last year. Mr. Azinheira explained the building
needs $600,000 worth of work.
The proposed new facility is 30,000 square feet on Fruit Street near the salt shed. (The
composting operation on Fruit Street has stopped.) The vehicles will be parked inside the
building. The committee discussed the increase in traffic this facility would cause, since the site
is currently vacant. Mr. Azinheira said heavy trucks have been using this site for years.
The committee discussed freeing up the current DPW site for a combined public safety building.
Mr. Azinheira said a public safety study will be done next year.
Mr. Ross said this project may not be ready to go to the 2012 Annual Town Meeting.
Mr. Ratliff said it does not make sense to ask for a separate debt exclusion vote for the DPW and
public safety buildings.
The committee discussed the fact that repairs to the existing Police, Fire and DPW facilities will
be minimal and only made in emergencies.
Mr. Azinheira explained his request for $754,000 in other building improvements and an
estimated $300,000 in North Common improvements.
4 DPW Highway
The committee discussed roadway maintenance and the merits and cost of chip sealing versus
overlay. Mr. Azinheira said a two-inch overlay will be done on Forbes and West Streets, which
should last 12 years.
DPW Highway requests are as follows:
1. Roadway maintenance - $800,000
2. Tennis Courts - $60,000 (four courts at Memorial Park and two at Plymouth Street will
be crack sealed, painted and refinished)
3. Brush Tractor - $109,000 (the existing brush truck is a 1972 model with a six-foot arm;
the proposed unit would have an 18-21 foot arm.

5. One -ton 4x4 pickup with plow - $45,000
