Bill seconds the motion. ALL IN FAVOR. SWIMMING Lorilee spoke to Ken Wood, Recreation Director for the Town of Easton. Ken will be meeting with his commission this week. If f. we were to swim at the Easton pool, the bus would be $10.00 cheaper than if we were to swim at Wrentham. Ken was quite receptive. Easton has swimming lessons in the morning and then the pool would open for open swim. There are three depths to the pool. There is a beach area and a picnic area. The pool is approximately six miles from the Town Hall in Mansfield. It is approximately, 35 years old. It is a pond. Ken was complaining about the vandalism that went on this winter. Our summer camp children would probably use the pool once a week. Commission thought swimming lessons would be nice for the campers. Lorilee stated that unless we had 40+ children to attend the swimming lessons, it wouldn't be worth it `ICE SKATING PARTY - TAUNTON SKATING RINK Flyers went ,out to the schools this week. SUMMER CAMP EVALUATION PROCESS Commission went over the employee applications, job descriptions, revised questionnaire for 'counselors 'and C.I.T.'s „volunteer forms, ;camp ;sub -committee "notes" for brochure, program guide and activities. Lorilee did an excellent job writing the above. Lorilee will add a "global statement" on the Camp Director's job description. There will be a biweekly evaluation done on the counselors by the Camp Director and Head Counselors. Lorilee and John did an exemplary job writing the situations on the counselor questionnaires. Recreation Commission Minutes February 10, 1992 Page 2 GOALS AND OBJECTIVES Lorilee is striving for the same goals and objectives as the Com- mission. There is no news on the Plymouth Street project. The Commission would like an evaluation of the existing; programs. There was a discussion on who would keep the programs running if Lorilee were to leave her position. Bill Williams, the Town Manager, would be in charge of Parks and Recreation. Ron would like a step by step instruction guide of all the programs and how they are run. Commission agrees that there should be a protocol for any program that we run. Lorilee explained to the Commission that there are folders kept on each program and in that folder it explains all about the program (cost, etc.) Commission would dike to see if we need an "action plan" and when we should implement the "action plan". Ron would like a checklist be put together for each programa VACATION MANIA FLYER Commission looked over the flyer. The Town skating parties at Fulton's Pond on Sundays, `Free ;ice skating party at the Taunton Skating Rink on Wednesday, February 19 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Mt. Wachusett Ski trip on February 20, 1992, !Sesame Street Live "Let's Play School on February 23. 1:00 p.m. performance. NORWOOD CIVIC CENTER Lorilee went to observe the Civic Center with Theresa Anderson. Theresa would like to use the Park Row School for a`community center. There was a steady group of people going in and out of the Civic Center. They have all different programs. Some facilities included are a<wrestling ring, sauna, pool and ping pong room combined. Their summer camp is in two week sessions. ` It is '$30 or $40 per session. It is probably subsidized by the Civic Center. Lorilee sees the need for a community center in Town, but she also sees the need for more importantthings in Town which, in all probability, will come first. SECRETARIAL SUPPORT Ron explains that at the last meeting Lorilee stated that she would like to have a part-time secretary during the 'heavy months of registrations ,(such as summer 'camp and basketball). This would 'enable her to free up her ;time to prepare for other programs. Ron and Lorilee had a meeting with the Town Manager last Friday (February 7) at 7:30 a.m. The Town Manager clarified that Diane Troy will be working for the Town Clerk and that Lorilee can work Diane into her budget for six hours per week. Recreation Commission Minutes February 10, 1992 Page 3 Diane will be able to help out with phone calls and registra- tions. The Commission will evaluate this situation at the next meeting to see whether a part time person is warranted. The Town Manager does not agree with having to 'pay overtime for recreation - committee meetings and for Saturday registrations. Lorilee feels 'that we still have to offer Saturday registration to the public.' TABLED UNTIL NEXT MEETING. SUMMER CAMP Tuition Kathy Connaughton from F.A.C.T. (Friends At Camp Today) was scheduled to talk to the Commission at 8:30 p.m. The Commission Chairman stated that Kathy is instrumental in the changes made to the Summer Camp. Kathy and the Sub -Committee projected an $8,000 deficit for next year. The Sub -Committee would like the tuition this year for the Summer Camp to be, for eight weeks, $250 for the first and second child, $150 for the third child and $100 for the forth child for residents. For a family of four the cost would be $750.00 for eight weeks. Non -Residents would be $290 for all children. Counselors The Sub -Committee would like to .give the counselors a 4% increase in salary this year. Ratios For ages 4, '5, and ;6, the ratio would be 7 to 1. For ages 7 and older, the ratio would be 10 to 1. Scholarships One free week per child. Lorilee would designate the week the child ;would attend.Last year worked out very well with Lorilee putting the scholarship children into the open weeks. The way -Lorilee did it was to have an even number ofcampers each week. Great Woods Summer Program The Sub -Committee would like to tie into the Great Woods Program. The counselors will walk the children down to the school and bring them back.' f Recreation Commission Minutes February 10,'1992 Page 4 Miscellaneous, -Items Lorilee will, post the fees for Summer Camp and get the paper work together as soon as possible. F.A.C.T. will follow up on the telephone calls for donations to the camp for one more year. She feels this is very important. The main issues were addressed at the last Sub -Committee meeting. The head counselorswere addressed. The Sub -Committee feels that the head counselors are most needed because of the 'size of the camp and to free up the Camp Director.' There was a dispute over the cost per child. One Commission member feels that the third and fourth 'child should not be discounted. His argument was that all the other campers should not have to pay for these discounted children. The cost per camper should be lowered and the third and fourth child should pay full price. He feels that everything should be equal. People who pay shouldn't have to support people who .do not pay. He also feels that the ratio is too low. _Thereshould be at least an eight to one ration. This, also, would keep the 'cost of the camp down. Lorilee stated that the hiring of counselors is based on the number of children attending camp. Commission wants Lorilee to tell the public how the extra $50.00 is warranted in the brochure; (what is the public getting for the additional $50.00). Lorilee states that the campers will be getting the extra supervision that she feels is necessary; for the children's' safety.
