YMCA David Scarchilli Task Force Chairman for Mansfield to bring YMCA to ;Mansfield. David Barbour Spokesman from YMCA David Scarchilli wanted to speak to the Commission to explain what the 'update is .on having the YMCA come to Mansfield. He also assured us that the Y would not compete with Mansfield Recreation Department. Basically ;he explained that he was working with the "Together We Can" group to bring the Y'to Mansfield. There will be ,a presentation at Mansfield High School, on October 27th explaining to the public why we should have the YMCA here in Mansfield. Key points - To bring the Y to Mansfield there has to be interest and need in the Community. The Y would raise money through membership. Would use municipal buildings then rent space to set up a store front. -Hire a manager for the store front. Run programs that meet the ,needs and interests of the Community. The Y and Recreation working together to _make programs stronger. Have programs for everyone whether they can afford it or not. David Barbour who represents the YMCA - made <it_very clear that the Y would not compete with the Mansfield Recreation Department. The reason that we are here in Mansfield is that Mansfield showed great interest in having the Y in the Community. David Scarchilli will keep the Commission informed about this program through Maryanne Panaro-Grady who is attending these meetings for the Recreation Commission. 4_ 2a Summer Camp Allen Weintraub, Director of Summer Camp Allen gave his report Camp went great this year. He was very pleased with the counselors, the kids and the parents. He commented that even through the camp ran smoothly their is always room for improvement. He can still 'see changes for next year on 'grouping kids by ,age. Next year he would like to see, for example Ages 7 & 8 together rather than 7'thru 9 year olds together. Ages 8 & 9 years old together. Ages 10 & 11 together rather than 10 thru_12 year olds together. Ages 11;& 12 year old together. Schedules - How long should a session be for activities. Afternoon - Kids go with counselors and they pick out what activities they want to do ,Arts & Crafts, Kick 'Ball etc. there are 5-8 activities to choose from. Kids get a change to be with other kids and counselors in this time frame. 'Allen felt this worked out very well. Trips - Allen felt very strongly that the Camp Shirts were great for identifying the kids on trips.: He felt that the counselors could keep a better handle on the kids in their group with the bright color of the camp shirts. All in all the 'camp trips went well. Franklin Park Zoo very interesting. Swimming Trips great'. Bowling - would like to see the 'small balls for next year, Rocky Point and Kings Castle Land - went well. Allen commented that for the most part trips are a good thing. The kids and the counselors enjoyed going. Allen gave out suggestion sheets for the counselors to fill out with comments and suggestions about the trips. Allen also strongly suggested that he would like to have more training for counselors before camp starts. In May he would like 1'whole day with counselors on Camp Schedules, Camp Counselors Skills. The last week in June he would like to have a 3_day orientation for the counselors on how to handle 5 & 6 year olds problems and what to expect. Have a -Social Worker come in and explain how to look for and handle problems. Allen also commented that he would like to see more CITs in the program. Allen would also like to see 1 CIT in every group. There are 17 groups. CITs you cannot always count on this group. This is a volunteer program with no guarantees that they will be hired for a camp counselor. CIT training time - 1 period a week. F S p Ron suggested that maybe we could have a bonus for CITs $;25.00 or '$100. Allen was asked if he could have anything he wanted for next year what would be on his wish list. He would like more storage space. Its very hard to keep the equipment and supplies clean and accessible. Ron suggested that they could purchase shelves that have wheels on them. They ,could wheel them out of the office in the morning to set up for ;the day and at closing wheel them back into the office for storage. Ron thanked Allen for a great job this year. Discussion ended at 9:30 P.M. Next meeting October 18, 1993 at the Town Hall 7:00 P.M. Respectfully Su mitted by: / q H len Christian, Commission Secretary Date
