RECREATION COMMISSION
June 26, 1995
Members Present: Commission Chairman, Ron Reeves, Commission members,
Betty O'Connor, Maria Gazzolo, John Bowen, Tom Baker
Lorilee Fish, Director of Park and Recreation
Kristen Helmreich, Asst to the Recreation Director
MINUTES:
Minutes of June 12, 1995 amended as follows:
SUMMER CAMP: Filled with 165 campers. For ages 5 and 6 there is a 7 to
1 ration, and for ages 7 through 10 there is a ratio of 10 to 1. Camp
has never filled up this fast before. There are 25 scholarship re-
quests. Lorilee would like to give each scholarship child a one week
slot. Ron feels that the criteria for the availability of a camp week
should be the same regardless if they are paying campers or scholarship
attendees. Commission discusses this.
- John feels the scholarship children should be given a spot.
- Betty suggests filling the spots with scholarship children as the
scholarships come in. Lorilee stated that this would lessen the
chance for the 8 week campers if we did that.
- Ron suggests we use the same criteria for the scholarship children
as we do the paying campers.
- Betty feels strongly about the need to accommodate the scholarship
children.
- We need to take all the scholarship children, or we don't take any
of them. We cannot pick and choose.
It was suggested that we go over paperwork and check the paying people
to see how the scholarships can fit in. TABLED until we meet June 26,
1995.
MOTION: Ron motions to accept the minutes of June 12, 1995 as amended
above. Tom seconds the motion. ALL IN FAVOR.
BUSINESS:
ICE TECHNOLOGY: Ice Technology has been settled.
HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL: Begins tonight with 3 teams.
ADULT VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE: There are 4 teams definite, with a possibility
of 5 teams. Individuals will show up at the court on opening day to
form the teams. We also had a managers' meeting on 6/22/95.
SUMMER CAMP: Filled.
Money is coming in strong. The actual income to date is
$57,774.50.
We received a list of Rules and Regulations of the Massachusetts
Day Care Laws. We are considered a recreational camp and have to
follow the guidelines of a 1:5 ratio for 5 and 6 year olds. We
also have to post an evacuation plan in the Park and a fire drill
at the High School has to be executed. This will all have to be
in writing with a copy to Scott Leite, Health Agent. Scott Leite
will also schedule an immunization clinic for the counselors.
Lorilee will be working with the counselors at camp for 3 days.
Thursday she has scheduled a barbecue and the paramedics will be
down at camp for a first aid course which will last 3 hours. Joe
Sarro, from the Fire Department, will take a walk through the park
with the counselors pointing out the danger spots and what to
watch out for. Friday afternoon Dr. Rick Solomon, a child
psychologist, will be teaching the counselors what signs to look
for in regards to child abuse. This year the orientation will
last 3 days.
New medical forms will go out tomorrow with a letter
attached for all the campers' parents to fill out and return
before camp starts.
SCHOLARSHIPS: Cynthia King, summer camp secretary, waited until Friday,
the last day of registration, and called the campers parents who were on
the waiting list. No one was interested in the weeks that were still
available, so we slotted the scholarship campers into those dates.
a" THE GREAT DUCK RACE: 1,121 ducks sold this year. This number is up 22L
ducks from last year. It was a great night. The sound system was ex-
cellent.
SWIMMING PROGRAM: Almost filled: 36 sign ups in the p.m. session; 38
sign ups in the a.m. session.
CALENDAR: Betty would like to change the colors of the calendar instead
of having the same colors year after year. The Commission would like to
insert a letter themselves into the calendars from the Commission so
that the residents know where the Calendar came from. The calendar
(3,600 copies) should be ready by 8/17/95 so that we can insert the let-
ters into the calendars. Distribution date will be 8/25/95 through the
Mansfield News.
MYBA: We have reserved a classroom at the High school for a philosophy
session. Jim Higgins and Helen McCarthy have the same philosophy as we
do which is everyone will have a chance to play. There is a meeting at
the Town Hall tomorrow night, 6/27/95, at 7:30 p.m.
3 ON 3 BASKETBALL: It is going great. Helen is doing a great job.
NEXT MEETING:
July 10, 1995 at 7:00 at the Town Hall. Jim Troy from Matryx will be
present with color samples and paper stock.
ADJOURNMENT:
Betty motions to adjourn. Tom seconds. ALL IN FAVOR.
