Lorilee Fish, Director of Park and Recreation
Kristen Helmreich, Asst to the Recreation Director
MINUTES:
Minutes of May 22, 1995 amended as follows: Swimming program price
$2,200. Voice mail: Commission would like to have 4 boxes installed by
the Fall of 1995.
THE GREAT DUCK RACE: Lorilee took names of those who wished to help
with the GREAT DUCK RACE.
SWIMMING PROGRAM: 34 people have signed up so far, just about all are
campers. The afternoon session (1:00 to 4:00 p.m.) is still available.
Lorilee hopes to keep the campers in the a.m. session, and non -campers
in the p.m. session. Ron would like to get the afternoon session as
well. Kristen doesn't think that moving the afternoon session up to
12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. would be a problem so they would be back at the
park by 4:00. The swimming lessons are held in the Wading River at Camp
Edith Read on North Worcester Street in Norton. The Commission is very
pleased with this program.
HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL: There will be 8 teams. Four teams are con-
firmed. Lorilee ordered the t -shirts. Betty O'Connor commented on how
well the court looks. Lorilee stated all they need are long railroad
spikes to tack down the boundary lines. Tom would like to walk through
with Lorilee or Kristen so that it can be shown on cable t.v. Ten
people have signed up. Rules have to be made up.
ICE TECHNOLOGY: Lorilee has not received anything in writing. Lorilee
assumes the Town of Mansfield has settled, but doesn't know if we
received a check yet. The Commission talked a little bit about the ice
skating parties for this Winter. Lorilee stated that Fulton's pond is
very deep and Kingman Pond has a swift current. The ice is checked very
carefully before we give the ok for a party.
Matryx: Jim Troy stopped by and went over the schedule and the calendar
with the Commission. A meeting was set up at Lorilee's house next Mon-
day with Jim and Diane Troy to go over any changes. Commission was
asked to go over the calendar and get any changes they have in to
Lorilee by next Monday before the meeting. Lorilee would like a dis-
tribution date of August 18, 1995. Jim Troy will be back in on June 26,
1995 meeting with paper samples, layout, etc.
SUMMER CAMP: Filled with 165 campers. For ages 5 and 6 there is a 7 to
I ration, and for ages 7 through 10 there is a ratio of 10 to 1. Camp
has never filled up this fast before. There are 25 scholarship re-
quests. Lorilee would like to give each scholarship child a one week
slot. Ron feels that if there are paying children that want to get into
camp, that the scholarship children should not be allowed to take their
slots because they are scholarships, but only if all the paying children
get in camp, then we should fill the empty spots with scholarship
children. Commission discusses this.
- John feels the scholarship children should be given a spot.
- Betty suggests filling the spots with scholarship children as the
scholarships come in. Lorilee stated that this would lessen the
chance for the 8 week campers if we did that.
- Ron suggests we use the same criteria for the scholarship children
as we do the paying campers.
- Betty feels strongly about the need to accommodate the scholarship
children.
- We need to take all the scholarship children, or we don't take any
of them. We cannot pick and choose.
It was suggested that we go over paperwork and check the paying people
to see how the scholarships can fit in. TABLED until we meet June 26,
1995.
MEMORIAL PARK: Fred Grant was hired for the Part Time Seasonal Position
beginning tonight at the park. Lorilee is hiring a second person for
one or two evenings per week to cover Fred when he is in charge of the
movies and concerts. This person will also be needed for programs such
as the Duck Race, Halloween Parade, etc.
MANSFIELD YOUTH BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION MEETING: John Bowen attended
this meeting and was very upset with what was said at that meeting. Jim
Higgins, President, and Lorilee interviewed candidates for the Program
Director position on Saturday and Monday and Lorilee stated he did a
very good job. Lorilee also announced that Helen McCarthy took the
position as Program Director. Ron is very pleased stating that she will
do a terrific job. The other candidates did not have the experience
that Helen has.
PERMITS: Lorilee went over the new permits. One permit requested that
the fee be waived and Commission stated that we should charge them.
