wording, on page 1, from "in chemicals" to "for chemicals", and in the Basket-
ball section to include #4 of the "Formation of the MYBA" letter. Betty
seconds the motion. ALL IN FAVOR. NONE OPPOSED.
BUSINESS:
Basketball: An ad will go in the Mansfield News on Friday, March 31, 1995 for
y the Program Director position. Commission feels that the Director should not
be allowed to play in the league.
Commission welcomes everyone to the first MYBA (Mansfield Youth Basketball As-
sociation) meeting. Lorilee Fish introduces herself, the Commission members,
r" Kristen Helmreich, and Diane Troy. Lorilee gives a background description of
what the numbers for the Basketball Recreation program's participants were in
the past, and what they are now, and how the St. Mary's CYO Basketball program
was combined with the Recreation program. Lorilee also told about The Metro
West Program, and how these programs have grown.
Jim Kenney discussed why he would like to start the MYBA. He stated there are
a lot of fragmented groups in Town and he would like there to be only one
group and would like to improve the quality of the game, get a lot of children
involved in a more competitive environment. He also stated that he thought
the turnout for tonight's meeting was outstanding.
Ron Reeves discussed how the Commission tries to meet the needs of the Town
for all their programs, including Basketball and how they offer the oppor-
tunity for all children to play. He also stated how the Commission wants the
best program for everyone involved and how the MYBA shall meet the expenses of
the program, be carefully monitored and supervised, and how there should be a
"Mission Statement" and have these requirements met by the MYBA. He continued
his discussion on how the Parks and Recreation Department is very small and
with the growth of the Town, the way it has been going, there are tremendous
pressures on the Department and how they have limited resources.
Jerry Tulis spoke about how he would like people to step forward for the
various positions available and how he took the Bylaws from Soccer and would
like to modify them for the MYBA. He stated how the Program Director's posi-
tion will be a paid position and will be advertised in the paper. He also
stated that interviews will be done by Lorilee Fish and a member of the MYBA.
Jerry also mentioned that there will be another meeting set up, probably at
the end of April, to have elections, a committee for the Bylaws, etc. He
stated that volunteers are a very important part of this process. Jerry also
talked about how Lorilee Fish would be on the Board of Directors, and how she
plans on working with the MYBA until the criteria is met and then the MYBA
will be released from the guidance of the Park & Recreation Department.
Al Post talked about the program development, instituting working committees,
and what is going to hold the children's interest in the game. He would like
to have coaches' clinics, and ideas on how they are going to run these
clinics. Al would like to have a good program that we could all commit to.
Some questions and comments from the people who attended this meeting were on
the consistency of the Fall and Summer programs. They would like to make this
a unified effort. Everyone will be able to play, no matter what their skill
level may be. They want this program to continue to grow. Jerry Tulis stated
that he needs strong leaders for this program. There were not many complaints
from the basketball surveys that went out. Their main goal is to have this
program enjoyable and fun for everyone. There was also interest in expanding
the girls league, and how fathers should get involved. They need the volun-
teers or it will dwindle away because of lack of interest. There was also a
question raised if Lorilee Fish could write, in her next letter, for people to
think about 2 people who would like to become involved. Also, maybe something
could be passed out at school advertising the need for volunteers and maybe
include the kindergarten children. They would like the parents to become in-
terested in coaching.
Ron Reeves stated these were all very good questions thanked everyone for
coming. After everyone left, the Commission talked a little more about the
meeting, how well the turnout was, and how their questions were very good.
Ron would like to see all motions, from now on, in bold faced type.
