MINUTES:
Ron motions to accept the minutes of November 14, 1994. Ray seconds,
all in favor.
CORRESPONDENCE:
Discussion on Special Town Election - Capital Funds Override on December
6, 1994 from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Discussion on the Super Bowl - There will be extra bleachers. School
does not get gate. Condition of field is worn. Marriot Corp. is look-
ing into renting approximately 500 feet of fencing for this game.
Memo has gone out to METRO reminding them of the late fee. Four players
have not paid to date. We have received 42 payments since last week.
BUSINESS:
Ray would like to see an adult basketball court on Plymouth Street.
Lorilee needs to put a little more light on the basketball court at
Memorial Park. The biggest problem will be getting a pole in there for
the lights. The placement of the pole is important.
1. Capital Improvement Budget: Lorilee is working on the Capital Im-
provements budget which will include Plymouth Street for $50,000
and Memorial Park for $10,000 for field expansion. Lorilee feels
if the override goes through the field will be moved. Dan Clif-
ford controls Plymouth Street Capital Improvement funds, but
Recreation requests them. No money is budgeted, this year, for
Plymouth Street. The pump will be in by the Spring. The well is
in good shape. The 1997 Capital Improvements budget will include
a 5th Tennis Court and repaving the courts. Field expansion is
more important than the Tennis Court. Dan Clifford thinks we can
pave the parking lot next year.
2. Baseball Field: Lorilee spoke with Eddy Jameson and told him to
hold off on the field reconstruction next fall. There is not
enough time now to grow grass. Sod is a lot less maintenance than
grass. All we have to do is water and protect it.
3. Youth Basketball: Discussion on the enrollment in this program,
grades 1-4 is limited to 50 per time slot. Grades 5-8 is an un-
limited enrollment. Discussion on the elimination of sign-up
night at St. Mary's Church. Commission agreed to cancel sign-ups
at St. Mary's. Coaches Night: Coaches are invited to attend the
talk on the Basic Skills Program.
4. Tree Lighting Ceremony. There was a very good turnout, ap-
proximately 1,000+ people attended. The Elk's Club went through
five 5 gallon containers of hot chocolate. We will rent two addi-
tional containers next year so hopefully we will not run out. The
Mansfield Choral Society was fantastic. The sound system was a
huge success. Next year we will put sound on the band. Dan
Stapleton was in charge of the sound. He does a lot of work with
Great Woods.
5. Summer DARE Program. Lorilee met with Lt. Figuredo and Mike
Elsworth, the new DARE officer. They are writing a grant request
for a summer DARE Program. If they receive the funds they would
like to be a part of our summer camp. The officer would attend
camp in a counselor type role where he would assist the counselors
and play with the children. There would be no uniforms or police
type ID. If this program does not get funded, the DARE officer
would work the school year with children grades 6 and younger.
6. Summer Activities for 13 years and older. A summer camp mother,
who's child will be 13 next summer, called and requested something
be done for the 13+ age group. Summer camp takes children from
ages 5 through 12. If we do run activities for this age group, we
would need volunteer chaperons. Activities such as day trips and
crafts were discussed. Lorilee would like to see the schools in-
volved. She would like to advertise to see what kind of a
response there would be. Commission would like to start with 2
trips and see if there would be an interest. Ron would like the
Commission, for the next meeting, to think about what kind of ac-
tivities we could plan for this age group and how it would become
a successful program. He would like the Commission to think about
the pricing, etc. One suggestion was to start with the Boy Scouts
or Girl Scouts, maybe put an ad in the paper, get Great Woods in-
volved. Lorilee will speak with Dr. Nicoletti regarding ac-
tivities of interest for this age group. Commission feels it
would be a big plus if Great Woods expands their program.
7. Summer Camp for 4 and 5 year olds. Commission thinks it would be
a good idea to get the parents involved. Lorilee to send letter
out this month stating she would like to set up a meeting with the
parents and map out a plan. This meeting should be set up some
time in January. Commission would like to know if there is a need
for this type of a program.
NEW BUSINESS:
Ice skating parties: Starts January 1, 1995, ice permitting.
F.A.C.T.: Commission thought it would be nice for the balance of the
money to go back to the camp for new equipment. Diane Troy, F.A.C.T.
Chairperson, to speak with F.A.C.T. members on this idea and get back to
Commission as soon as possible.
NEXT MEETING:
December 12, 1994. Only one meeting for the month of December.
ADJOURNMENT:
Ray motions to adjourn. Betty seconds. ALL IN FAVOR.
Respectfully submitted by:
