She would like $827 to be put back in sea- sonal Personnel to get the original request of $14,500 back. BUSINESS: Summer Camp - We are 82% full. This is our 4th week of registration. Recreation Position - Assistant - There are 2 finalists to be interviewed for a 2nd time. They both have good recreation and office experience. Duck Race - Lorilee would like to do something else besides the duck race. It would have to be exciting for the children in town. She would like to do something to kick off the season. Dick Lewis suggested we do something with stars (Movies with the Stars), but Lorilee and Dick couldn't think of a game to play using them. Commission suggested having numbers on the back and playing "Bingo". Commission discussed things they could do. They discussed running an ad in the Mansfield News and cut out a star from the paper. Someone called from the Sun Chronicle and wanted to put something in the paper on what we could do for the "Kick Off'. Lorilee will call her tomorrow. Recreation lost a lot of money with in-line hockey last year. If we don't have the numbers of par- ticipants this year we will not run it. Mansfield Little League - Gary Barclift - Mr. Barclift, a representative from Mansfield Little League came in to speak with the Commis- sion. He stated that there are 50 total teams and Little League will need a field in 1998. Mr. Barclift also stated that Mansfield Little league has been approached by Ed Tartufo to help with funding for the Little League Baseball Field at Plymouth Street Recreation Facility. Right now may not be a good time financially because they are planning to build 2 fields at the Otis Street complex. They have been asked to donate $9,000 which would cover the cost of the fenc- ing for the out field. They may be able to make a pledge for the next 3 years beginning in 1998, but right now it is not financially possible. Lorilee suggested that Gary meet with Dan Clifford, DPW Director, and Ed Tartufo to discuss funding and to find out why the fencing is proposed to be placed at 320' feet rather than 300' which is the Little League standard. Gary will keep us informed if he hears about the progress of the field. ADJOURNMENT: MOTION: Betty motions to adjourn. Bob seconds the motion. BOB SEC- ONDS THE MOTION. ALL IN FAVOR - CORRESPONDENCE: Lorilee heard from the MBC. She stated that they cannot use any of Kingman Pond behind the Old Town Hall, which would include the parking areas. The bids are being opened April 7, 1997 for the reconstruction of the old Town Hall into the Police station and everything is closed off so we cannot have the duck race or fishing derby. The Commission is going to think about another place to have the duck race. Lorilee will look into Maple Street. Lorilee stated that The Mystic Club building has been condemned. They estimated $80,000 to renovate the building. BUSINESS: Lyell Ourada, VFW Post Commander, called Lorilee to say they have built an inside storage unit which doubles as a serving bar for their various, parties that they have at the VFW. He will be sending a bill for $500. Total cost of the project is estimated at $1,400. The VFW will pay the balance. May 12, 1997 is the new date for the Town Meeting. Bathrooms and refreshment stand at Plymouth Street will not be opened this year, or until July 1, 1997 if we get money through Capital Improvement at the May 12 Town Meeting. Lorilee will request from DPW that the tennis courts at Memorial Park be worked on. A total resurfacing of the tennis courts is estimated between $10,000 and $15,000. We will put in 5 tennis courts at Plymouth Street which estimated around $80,000. There are 2 bathrooms at Plymouth Street, but they cannot be used. Lorilee will make up keys for Plymouth Street for the Recreation Commission. Summer Camp registration is going very well. NEW BUSINESS: Bob would like to look into building a facility similar to "Field of Dreams" such as a track, and 3 basketball courts inside. A field house would meet the facility needs of the recreational interests in town. Franklin's facility is 100% subsidized. Bob will talk to Emil Giordiano on the School Committee and Dave Young from MBC. Dick thinks that the park should be free to the children of Mansfield. He stated that there is a concern of the townspeople that they cannot afford the programs that are held at the park now. He stated that years ago everything was done on a volunteer basis. Lorilee stated that the summer camp program is $90,000 a year which covers personnel and cost of running the camp. The Commission felt that because society has changed so much, we need supervision to make sure that the children are in a safe environment.
