KEEP MANSFIELD BEAUTIFUL
Welcome & Call to Order
Meeting called to order at 7:05.
Minutes accepted from previous meeting and signed by Pat Colbert.
Treasurer's report - Mike
• The current balance is $12,208.97. $532.62 is in the PayPal account.
How to spend our finances - All
• NRT recently donated $5,000 to the Fultons Pond Improvement Fund. We would like to
donate to this fund as well, but want to get more specifics on the plan before donating.
• Two other areas we are interested in funding is the Mansfield Bike Path and the Pales Fuel
location.
• Neil would also like to pursue placing a fence at the Mansfield Green. He will be doing
additional research to determine the best type of fence for that area.
• Neil is going to draft up a "Giving Tuesday' fundraising initiative to help with these projects.
Flower barrels - Nancy and Pat
• There are 89 flower barrels. We have started with the removal of the wave petunias and
planting of the fall mums. We have three mum colors: yellow, orange, and a yellow/orange
mix. The downtown should look festive!
• Nancy and Pat pulled the dead wave petunias the first week in September from about half of
the barrels. The other barrels were left alone since the flowers looked great.
• Mike pulled all the flowers from the North side of town on Tuesday. Nancy and Pat planted
those barrels with fall mums on Wednesday (12 barrels).
• Pulling the rest of the wave petunias will occur on Friday. Mike H. is planning on picking up
36 plants. These mums will be planted by Nancy, Pat, Martha, Maureen, and Mike H.
• Mike H. is picking up the rest of the mums on Saturday morning.
• Nancy, Pat, Jason, Erik, Mike M., and Mike H. will plant the remaining mums.
• Neil suggested we investigate the cost of having a company care for the summer flowers.
This would involve watering, fertilizing, and de -bugging (if necessary). We do not need this
help for the spring pansies or the fall mums, since they are much easier to maintain. Martha
is going to send out an email to the large landscaping companies in Mansfield to see if they
offer this service and the associated cost.
Painted Barrels - Pat
• We have 2 more barrels that are currently being painted. The Adult Center is painting a
Candy Land theme. Another barrel will be a dragon.
• We have 3 barrels that are primed and ready to paint.
• We would like to have 2 more barrels painted, specifically for two locations: Savanna Salon
and Decca's. Both of those areas seem to attract litter. Pat is going to contact a high school
art student to see if she is interested.
• Friends of Memorial Park showed interest in painting a barrel for the new playground. Pat
will follow up with them. We also discussed about writing a grant to get a permanent litter
and permanent recycling barrel placed at this site. Pat will follow up with the Friends of
Memorial part to see if they would like us to pursue this grant.
Highway Programs - Neil
• Route 140 was cleaned up about 6 - 7 weeks ago.
School Programs - Neil, Martha, and Erik
• Neil and Nancy met with Teresa Murphy and the new building and grounds director. They
walked the school areas and pointed out areas for improvement. They mentioned that there
is no longer a Jordan/Jackson sign (removed because of construction) and should be placed
back on East Street.
• Teresa is working to remove Styrofoam from the cafeterias.
• Martha and Erik continue to work with Mrs. Tighe from the Jordan/Jackson on the Butterfly
garden. They need to determine where it should be located. We are hoping to donate some
butterfly bushes.
• For National Planting Day, Martha will be providing Winter Pollinators to the Robinson
School. Neil also received some of these plants from a grant he recently won. Neil to give
these plants to Martha.
Verizon Area - Erik
Erik created a plan for improving the Verizon Area. It involves keeping the arborvitae
bushes since they are healthy and provide the necessary screening. The arborvitae will be
trimmed and all the weeds around them will be pulled. Additional arborvitae will be planted
in between the gaps. The large tree will be removed, soil amended, drought tolerant
perennials planted, and irrigation installed (hopefully). There is already electrical on the
property. DPW will be doing all the work.
Nancy to follow up with the DPW and Downtown Committee to guarantee this plan is
accepted and implemented.
Recycling Weekend - Neil
• Recycling Weekend is scheduled for November 4th and 51h. This date coincides with the Fall
Weekend Cleanup.
• The Mansfield Green will be open on both Saturday and Sunday and the town will provide
the necessary coverage.
• Neil will communicate the Do's and Don'ts on what can be recycled. Neil already wrote a
document about this, which is located on the town website.
• We need to be there to cover the Savers dumpster, which will be for the textiles. We will be
receiving some funds from Savers based on the amount of textiles we collect.
• Neil will be sending out an email requesting shifts for this weekend coverage.
Adopt a Spot -Martha
• Guerrini weeded and mulched the Route 106 embankment. It looks great!
• Presentato pruned the trees at the Library.
• The Mansfield Green Girl Scout Troop site is overgrown and the new troop will be re -doing.
• Martha reported that no -mulching this spring made a difference to the gardens. Hopefully
we will have money in the budget for mulching next spring.
We Noticed - Mike H.
Sherman Jackson Funeral Home will receive the award. Mike H. will be presenting the award
to them. Nancy and Neil will provide Mike H the necessary information.
Pole Barrels - Nancy and Pat
Nancy and Pat are going to meet tomorrow to determine where the 8 new pole mounted
barrels will be placed downtown.
Nancy will provide Tracey with the information so DPW can install them in the next couple of
weeks.
Non -Profit Gift Fund Reception - All
On October 19th, the Non -Profit Gift Fund is having a reception at the new MMAS location
across from Xflnity Center from 6:00 - 8:30. Anyone who has received funds from the Non -
Profit Gift Fund is invited to attend to set up a display showing everything they have
accomplished because of the grant money.
Pat and Martha will set up the display. We will develop a tri -fold of the following: Mansfield
signs at North Common, South Common, East Common, and the Library; stone wall and
landscaping at the Mansfield Green; pole mounted barrels for the downtown; permanent
barrels and benches for downtown and Fultons Pond; tent and tablecloth for events; 6 self -
watering flower barrel liners for Flower Barrel Program; and our brochure.
Everyone from our Committee is encouraged to stop in to show our appreciation.
