Mass Health Planning & Dev "Acute and Long Term Care" Notice from Boston Herald American - Special section on SS Elderly Concerns on June 23 - Paula will notify senior citizens through the newsletter Senior Citizen discount catalog Corp of Engineering - programs re water care etc. Director's Report: DEA grant - Paula discussed use of the balance of the funds through classes, workshops etc. Director of DEA (Boston) saw no conflict of interest in members of the council as instructors - class participants should be charged for con- sumable supplies. Three classes to be added to the grant expenditures are: woodworking, lampshades and cake decorating. Paula reported that the renovations in Bridgewater really had no comparison to what Mansfield needs to have done. Their figures would be for 1977 at any rate not for 1981 or 1.982 as needed in Mansfield. New grants to be discussed at state level next week - BCHCE grants are for fuel, classes, newsletter and escort service The necessary repair to the bus has been done. There is a new Bristol County Foster Care for Elderly Citizens Advisory Board being formed if anyone is interested please apply. Assistant Director: Passengers for April 263 - miles traveled 635 Ada had many compliments on our Appreciation Day - so did other members of the Council. Thank you letters were discussed - to be remembered Bill Harlor for work at Bicentennial Court - Housing Authority and Tenants Association - E. Vernon will write to all the church women who donated refreshments. Old Business : Appreciation Day - Tedi had only one negative thought about the day - which was to be a Council event. Full participation of the Council should be expected Senior Citizens did assist and take up the slack and they worked hard. At clean up time -- Elinor and Tedi with Paula, Ada, and other seniors were cleaning up -- we could have used help! Otherwise the event was 99% perfect. Another year - or another event - we should assign areas of responsibility. It was noted that the media were invited, but did not attend. For future planning we suggest larger quarters-- as the Rose Garden - the date early in May (first Sunday) was approved. It was also noted that Foxboro, Sharon and Norton senior citizens were present and that many seniors from Mansfield - not previously involved - were present. The Day was also a good exposure for Council members - especially the new comers to the board (noted by Tedi) Minutes - May 4, 1981 - Page 2 Ada reported that members of Bicentennial Court were pleased with the Appreciation Day activities. Re. Paine School - letters to Selectmen, Building Committee and the media re our interest in the school are to besent. We need to know if we will be able to have the building before grant requests are written. DEA workshops for grant procedure not yet announced, but will be within the next three or four months. Paula suggested alternative heating systems for the grant proposal. It was suggested that we ask for costs for maintenance from the school department. We discussed support from business and organizational interests in town. We further agreed that the media not be notified at this time Woodworking class to be resumed next week. BCHCE Board of Directors Annual meeting reported by Paula and Brad Dauphinee. Senator Parker and State Representatives attended. Gov. Ring has tentatively approved the budget with a 30% increase. New Business New Classes - Gingerbread Houses - suggested classes in November or December for Christmas fairs and decorations. Tedi to instruct, Lamp Shade classes - E. Vernon reported costs and plans for the class to start this week if approved. Class size - 6; supplies for 6 (to be reused over and over cost to Grant Account $74.00) Lampshade materials to be purchased by the class members at $5.00 per for small lamps - this includes papers, trims, rings etc. Larger lamps could cost up to $10.00. Motion to approve the Lamp Shade Classes made by John; seconded by Tedi; in favor Brad and Chrm Flog; abstaining E. Vernon. While discussing events it was noted that Mansfield was one of the busiest COA in the county. Brad compared our Newsletter to others noting that it was superior in many ways. Our hot lunch program is very well attended in comparison and the lunches are excellent in comparison. We were told to note the new bulletin board made by Brad (with materials from his brother as well) Thank you to Bill Creeden was suggested. Brad offered assistance in making cabinets for the kitchen - cost to be estimated. Cabinets to be removable - Friends of COA may assist - Tedi reported that Operation Friendship members had suggested a dinner with Senior Citizens with guests from Ireland and Scotland. Invitation and date to be announced by OF Committee Another reminder that the bus drivers should note'STOP signs at all corner s well as other rules of the road. No further comment required As we nd\longer need the $2500 match for the fuel grant we discussed the item in the budget. It was agreed to leave the budget as it is at this late date. Changes could be made if necessary $75 voted for each(Paula and Tedi) to attend a workshop in Framingham. Motion by Brad, seconded by John - motion approved. Money to come from the 679-0 account. This is a one day program on Elder Advocacy Meeting Ajourned at 9:50 p.m. Next meeting at 8 p.m on Tuesday, June 9 at the COA center. By: E. C. Vernon, Secretary
