Council On Aging - Minutes of the Meeting November 11, 1984
D
®7
The meeting was called to order at 8:05 P.M. by President Robert Marshall.
Excused were LeighAnn Foster, Judy Cucinotta and Vicki Prasad.
The Secretary's Report was accepted after noting a date correction, as well
as adding remarks which were made near the end of the meeting of October 9th.
It is to be noted for the record that there was much concern expressed regar-
ding salaries for the Director and Assistant Director. There was a strong
concensus that these positions carry a great deal of responsibility, and that
the present salaries are not commensurate with that responsibility. The sug-
gestion was made to request a raise this year with the goal of upgrading these
positions in the future to reflect the responsibility for Services to Persons.
- Although not a source of revenue, this office provides a high-priority service
to humankind.
The Treasurer's Report was accepted as received.
Correspondence: Two announcements of meetings were the only items noted.
Director's Report: Self -Help fuel assistance applications are being accepted
by appointment on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays between 1:00 and 3:00 P.M. The
numbers are down from last year for several reasons: death, moves to subsidized
housing, and transfers into nursing homes. Gale has put the notices out on
Channel 8.
Vacation time for Gale will be November 29-30, possibly through December 5.
Longevity - $100 for Ada, to be added to the budget every year.
The Electric Company has a grant of $10,000 to do attic insulation for
thirty elderly and twenty non -elderly weatherization improvements.
The Bristol County Home Care Advisory Board has selected Gale as Chairman
as of December 6th.
There will be a cheese giveaway program at the end of November, but we
have no further details at present.
Donations of baked goods are being requested for delivery to housebound
elderly this Christmas season.
The Assistant Director's Report: The mini -bus carried 385 people 902
miles in October. This s a substantial increase over the past months, largely
4 because the bus is picking up passengers further from the center of town, as
well as having been used for transportation to and from the voting polls. It
was also used to go to the New Century Club meeting, and a trip to the Red
Snapper.
[Minutes - 11 November 84] 2.
The copier, which Gale was considering for purchase, costs more than is
available
through
current
funding.
Ada,
therefore,
approach the Friends
toseeif theywillbewillingto helpwiththisproject..
To date, $2,288.13 has been raised by the Fair. More money is expected.
A Penny Sale is being considered for a spring fundraiser. Several raffles
have raised $180.00 for the bus fund. It has been learned by a conversation
with Dick Sargeant that the United Way does not have money available for a new
bus .
New Business: On November 19th, Gale and Bob will meet with the Town
Manager to discuss the budget.
Storm Cancellation policy: Bob will check with the Highway Department
and will work out the mechanics of notifying the radio station. We voted the
following policy: "No School" also will mean that there will be no Drop In
Center activities.
The Center will close: Nov. 21st - the day before Thanksgiving.
Dec. 24th - the day before Christmas.
Dec. 31st - at noon.
Bob Marshall has written several letters to area businesses informing
them of the need for a new mini -bus to serve Mansfield's Senior Citizens. The
opportunity to donate money through the Friends organization was explained,
but it was clearly not a letter requesting donations.
We had expected a guest, Rosalie Israel, the Chairman of Bristol County
Home Care for the Elderly. She did not arrive.
The next meeting will be December 11th at 8:00 P.M.
The meeting was adjourned by vote at 9:00 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Patricia J. Hume
