Barbarisi, Superintent of Schools John Gustaysen, Carol R. Johnson and Assoc., Landscape Architects Robert N. Pine, P.E., Geotechnical Advisor Mr. Gustaysen made the presentation; Mr. Pine supplied technical information. This proposal involves: 1. The existing track will be resurfaced and regraded so that water will naturally flow across the track. The regrading will involve the plowing and breaking up of a thin layer of clay; which presently exists a few inches below the surface. 2. The baseball field north of the high school will require the installation of catch basins and underdrains in order to inprove subsurface drainage and a regrading. L m for this operation will be supplied from the excavation proposed on the opposite side of East Street. Allen Willis, Ware Street, informed the hearing that he had seen pipes being installed under the baseball field when it was originally built. Messrs. Gustaysen and Pine were interested to hear this since they had had no indication of such pipes existing. They promised to investigate this allegation stating that it could save the Town some expense. Mr. Gustaysen warned, however, that experience has suggested that any such pipes might be installed in such a way.as to be of little use. 3. On the opposite side of East Street, the existing drainage ditch is to be relocated in order to form a full-sized soccer field from the two existing Little League fields. Because of financial restrictions, this area might not be loamed and seeded at this time. The relocated six -foot -deep ditch will have a stoned bottom with the stone extending up the sides to the 10 -year storm level. The ditch has been designed, however to accommodate a 100 -year storm. A more natural grading to the ditch is planned than that which presently exists. Existing Culverts: i Mansfield School Department Hearing Summary Page Two 30" pipe north of High School --drains 194 acres north of area and 64 acres south of the area with a maximum flow of 53.4 cu. ft./sec. This proposal will add an additional 2.82 cu. ft./sec. to this flow in a 100 -year storm. The invert of this pipe is 143.46 and it has a slope of one-quarter of 1 percent. This is a metal corrugated pipe. 30" X 48" oval pipe under East Street with an invert of 138.10. 24" pipe under Ware Street at an elevation of 132.74. This pipe can surcharge and can handle a maximum of 84 cu. ft/sec, which is more than adequate of handle a 100 -year storm. Mr. Pine pointed out, however, that his pipe will be adequate as long as the 30" pipe north of the high school remains intact. Mr. Pine also explained that some maintenance (more riprap and remortaring) seems to be in order. The proposal calls for a 12" line to be added to this system to be fed by three manholes in the baseball field and two catch basins in the parking lot. This will be a solid pipe joining two performated drain lines. The relocated drainage ditch will extend for about 1,000 feet with a drop of five feet (one-half of 1 percent. The distance between the banks will be 24 feet. Mrs. Jellinek stated her concern that this project might contaminate Dustin Wells' recharge area. The hearing closed at 9:14 PM.
