Forester State Forester Dan Perrins attended the Conservation Commission meeting to discuss forestry management with members. Mr. Perrin discussed ways of undertaking a forestry management program in the Town of Mansfield. Mr. Perrins feels that the Conservation Commission should take steps to protect their land. He stated through management of forests and woodlands, improvement in the quality of trees and plants that are growing in the forests would be seen, and the land would be returned to approductive state. Through thinning, trees would be able to<multiply on their own. _Mr. Perrins also stated that areas void of vegetation would increase run-off. In starting a program of this nature, the. Commission would first have`to check land deeds to see if this management program would be allowed and if there were any restrictions. They would also have to decide on what type of management would be most beneficial --custodial or extensive management. It would be necessary, of oourse, that a forester walk the proposed areas of management. Mr. Perrins stated that no funding would be available if management was only minimal or Custodial. Wood could be sold to the public or donated or given to the town at a reduced rate. The revenue from the wood could be used to;pay for the project itself. >Chairwoman Royle -felt that any monies gained from commercial purposes would go into the town's,:geaeral fund and would not revert back to the Conservation Commission. Another type of management or tree farming would be to allow the public to make use of the wood in the forest. Concern was raised with ,allowing people to enter the forest to out wood, Mr. Perrins stated that the contract would dictate the amount and quality of cutting. He also stated thatmost foresters use standard contracts. Over -lay maps were used in preparing this proposed by-law. (A letter will be sent to DEQE in Boston requesting maps for the Town of Mansfield for use when preparing our by-law.)
