HomeMy WebLinkAboutLibrary Trustees 10/22/1994Minutes of Board of Trustees Meeting October 22,1994 Meeting opened at 8:11a.m. Everybody present: James Whalen, Nancy Brief-Pilz, Linda Lipson, Vivian Sweet, Leslie Pasch, and me, I'm Jeff Ptaschnik. The minutes were read and accepted. The treasurer indicated that we have a balance ending 9/94, of $70.634.06. However, she pointed out that we have more money going out, than coming in. A motion was made by Jeff, seconded by Linda, that money for library programming be limited to the interest on the Library funds (now at @ $3500/year). All were in favor. It was indicated that both Jim and I owed reports of previous minutes. The Gift list was "all taken care of." The Librarian's report was given. Jeff indicated that if any information is given to one Board member, it should be given to all Board members. Leslie agreed. Personnel Policy Amendment, under "Vacation." Motion by Nancy, second by Vivian to accept. All in favor. The books that Leslie and Doug had brought in to Boston to be appraised were not very valuable, except maybe for one pamphlet which could be worth several hundred dollars. It was felt that at this point none of the books should be sold. A discussion of the Internet took place and it was determined that we should move ahead. Options should be explored and alternatives pursued and not wait for ABLE. A motion was made by Jeff, seconded by Vivian, that the Library should be closed at 2:OOp.m. on the day before Christmas, December 24, 1994, for Chistmas eve. All were in favor. Security System - The system should be checked. New lights and locks should be investigated. Video cameras, as with cameras at the train parking lot, should be used to monitor the library and parking lot. Jim presented his report, and a good one it was, on the implementation of a local area computer network for the library. A motion was made by Jeff, seconded by Linda, that Jim should meet with the Cable Advisory Committee first, to see if Cable could cover the costs. If they couldn't or if they couldn't fund it all, specifications should be developed and bid in a timely manner. All were in favor. The Library budget is due November 15. It was agreed that we should seek an 8% increase, partly to cover the costs of the Internet. In addition, the book budget should be raised to $75,000. MEG Money - We have now @ $38,000. Some of this money should be used for new computer systems, videos, etc. In addition to buying new CD-roms, the CD-roms that we have currently, should also be updated on a yearly basis, e.g. Encarta for 1994, Time Almanac, etc. We were extremely happy to hear that both Tun and Linda will be reapplying. TV interviews later. A motion was made by Vivian, seconded by Linda, that "suggested donations" be eliminated and not be allowed in the common meeting room. All in favor. This will be shared with the Council on Aging. The meeting adjourned at @ 10:30 a.m.
