The monthly meeting of the Trustees of the Mansfield Public Library was held in
the Certuse room of the library on Thursday, January 31, 1997. Nancy called the meeting
to order at 5 P.M.
Chris read the Secretary's report which was approved with no corrections.
Linda presented the Treasurer's report. Our current balance is $14, 975.28.
Leslie highlighted the librarian's report. She had borrowed an electronic people
counter from the Eastern Region and in a one-week period, during the month of January,
3,325 patrons passed through the doors.
OLD BUSINESS
Budget Update. Leslie presented the budget package that has been given to the
Town Manager. It includes the two budgets that the Board has approved -- one
containing the step increases only, and one containing the step increases, along with the
additional Sunday hours. Our meeting with the Finance Committee will be Saturday,
February 15, 1997 at 10:30 A.M.
Roof Update/Capital Plan Meeting. Leslie and Nancy updated the Board on the
Capital Improvement Plan meeting that they attended on January 16th. At the joint Board
meeting with the Council on Aging (December 10, 1996) Bill Williams had recommended
that Leslie initiate proceedings to ensure that the roof expenditures be included in the
capital plan. To this end, Leslie filled out the appropriate paperwork and attended the
January 16, 1997 meeting with the CIP. This committee approved the cost of the engineer
consultant (estimated at $800.00) to be taken from the reserve fund account and
transferred to the library account under professional services. The committee followed up
with a written directive to Bill Williams to initiate legal action or a letter of demand to the
architect and general contractor of the roof.
Outside Lights. Leslie contacted John Larch, Light Commissioner, requesting that
they remove the outside lights that had been vandalized in December. The Town Light
Department installed a security light that Leslie reports is working well. She also spoke to
Chief O'Neill about the vandalism incident and he assured her that he and his staff are
working on the case and have increased their patrol of the library grounds.
NEW BUSINESS
New Computer for Reference After some discussion, Linda made a motion,
seconded by Vivian, to purchase a new computer for Mary, the reference librarian. The
motion was approved and Leslie will begin to get bids.
Program Approval. Two February programs were approved: Gardening with the
Experts, Tuesday, February 11, at 7:00 P.M.; and Steve Rudolph Magic, Tuesday,
February 18, at 10:30 A.M.
Mee ingRoom Set -Un. Leslie requested that Donald not include the set-up of the
meeting room for evening events in his daily duties. At this time, Donald sets the chairs €
and tables up each afternoon for the evening programs or meetings of various community
groups. Leslie does not feel that this should be his responsibility. The Board approved
the request. Pending the Council on Aging approval, Leslie will update the meeting room
form to reflect the change.
Junior Friends of the Library. We discussed the possibility of starting a Junior
friends group in Manfield. Norton Public Library appears to have a very active junior
group. Nancy will talk to Elaine, Children's librarian at Norton, and Leslie will talk to the
director, Mitch,
The meeting adjourned at 10:45 A.M.
The next meeting will be held Saturday, March 1, 1997 at 8:00 A.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Chris Cormier Hayes
Secretary
