Area of Critical Environmental Concern(ACEC) Lealie Luchonok from the Department of Environmental Management was present to discuss strengthening CRAAC's ACEC nomination. He explained that when a nomination is received for initial review, there are three options that Secretary DeVillars can take: (1) accept the nomination for full review, (2) decline the nomination or (3) request additional information. CRAAC received letters from Secretary DeVillars and Leslie Luchonok requesting additional information. The committee discussed the requests for more information at the meeting with Mr. Luchonok. The committee has 45 days in which to supply this information to the Secretary. In presenting the information, the committee should demonstrate the relationship (water supply protection) between the nomination criteria and highlight the significance of the designated area. Discussion also focused on the public information process and on where the public information meetings will be held. It was agreed that the Department of Environmental Management would start with two public information meetings for the purpose of notifying the public of the nomination and explaining the ACEC procedures. One meeting will be held in Mansfield to include Sharon and Foxborough, and the other meeting will be held near the town line of Taunton and Norton to include Taunton, Norton and Easton. After the public information meetings, a public hearing will be held. If the nomination is accepted, the nomination will be sent to Regional Planning Agencies, Legislators, and organizational groups within the Canoe River aquifer for comment. However, before all these meetings take place, CRAAC should provide informational releases to the various media explaining the ACEC to the public. Meeting time having expired, it was decided that the remaining agenda would be discussed at the next meeting in January. Meeting adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
