Kathy Romero mentioned that there are slides of Canoe River in Norton. 4 Tim Higgins - Update on Video Tim Higgins reported: video is moving along; trying to line up George Yell to talk about some of the historical aspects in Norton; in process of drafting an outline; want to try and get some quick shots; each segment will be twenty minutes; time frame is next summer. 5 Discussion of Long -Range Planning Sub -Committee Wayne Southworth stated there has been one meeting. Dick Lewis: there are still a lot of uncertainties; discussed political aspects on how to approach it; trying to pull together all the best pieces of each community; trying to make it a fair and responsible package. Joan Sozio: might want to consider coming up with a general bylaw. Consensus: there is some work that has to be done; all agreed it is politically sensitive. 6. Use of Road Salt on Routes 495 & 95 Background: all started with Route 1 when the state was going to widen the shoulders; salt rose in 10 years (11 to 22 per litre); Town of Sharon has agreed to switch to calcuim chloride. Concern: should this committee send a request to the state to establish low salt areas as it is effecting the wells. Discussion: should be careful how the letter is written; should point out this is a Sole Source Aquifer and an Area of Critical Environmental Concern; have educated our communities have not educated the state. On Mr. Tartufo's motion, seconded by Mr. Hardin, VOTED to send a letter of support to appropriate state agencies to see what they could do about the salting and encourage them to contact the Water Departments in the five towns and let the Water Department inform the state of the sensitive spots. 7. Old Business Joan Sozio: the Massachusetts River Protection Act is apparently hung up in the House Ways and Means; asking that letters be written so this can be voted on. Wayne Southworth and Kathy Romero reported on the Bridgewater College Earth Lab Conference: had a lot of people stop and collect information; there are a lot of teachers who want to teach a water curriculum. Wayne Southworth noted that the CRACC was listed as a co- sponsor of the "Taunton River Watershed Connections Project". A pilot program is being conducted at the Junior High level. ` 8. New Business 1. Wayne Southworth played a new tape entitled "Customer Attitude Survey" for the members. Survey proves that the public wants to be informed and they are willing to pay for it. 2. A short explanation was given on the "Xeriscape" Garden planted on the lawn of this building. 3. Mr. Hardin noted that Wayne Southworth had an article on this community in a Metro Chamber of Commerce publication. 4. Wayne Southworth: attended a meeting in Barney Frank's office. There was part of an announcement of a study to be done on the Taunton River Basin by the Army Corps of Engineers; it was made very clear that this is not soley for Brockton - will be a study of the entire Taunton River Basin; going to put the scope of work together in February; our communities are all in the stressed portion of the basin.
