III. DISCUSS ROAD SALT USE: -MASS HIGHWAYS
GUEST: SAM POLLICK MASS DPW- BOSTON
Chairman Southworth introduced Mr. Sam Pollick - Hydrogeologist with the Mass Highway
Department who did a presentation on the use and effect of road salt on the State highways.
He explained that Ire wanted to stop the salt contamination in public and private water supplies.
There are only two individuals employed by the State to investigate this problem. Mr. Pollick
specializes in the area of public water supplies. He supplied the Committee with "Salt Complaint
Forms". When a community feels that there is a concern about water contamination they (the
community) must supply a monthly report monitoring the changes in the water supply as well as
a 10 year history of the site. When these reports and complaint forms are submitted they are put
on a priority list. Unfortunately due to the lack of personnel it may take a considerable length of
time to resolve the problem. Mr. Pollick ended his presentation with questions from the
Committee.
IV. UPDATE ON VIDEO
Tim Higgins told the Committee that presently he has been unable to find a project coordinator to
handle the Canoe River Video Project. Tim feels that in order for this to be a successful project a
coordinator is vital. There have been several persons that would like to assist but no one has
come forward to chair this project. For the immediate future this video project will be put on
hold.
