at 1:00 p.m.
Approval of Minutes: The following correction was made to the
minutes. Joan Sozio's name was added to the Members Present
list at the June 1, 1995 meeting. Joan Sozio moved that the
minutes be accepted as corrected seconded by Tim Higgins. The
minutes were approved as corrected.
New Member: Wayne Southworth introduced Fred Watson as a new
member from Norton. Fred is taking Kathy Romero's place on
the committee. He is a health agent for the town of Norton.
Annual Elections: The following members were elected to serve
as officers for 1995 - 1996: Wayne P. Southworth, Chairman,
Edward Tartufo, Vice -Chairman and Suzanne Erikson, Secretary.
Video Project: Wayne has not heard from Mike Maynard of Norton
who has all of the videos. The DPW Director of Easton (even
though he is leaving Easton) along with Dave Andrews from Easton
Continental Cable Access would also like to work on the video
project. Wayne will follow up on this.
Lyn White's husband took aerial photo's of the Canoe River and
gave them to Wayne. Some of these photos could be used in the
video. Wayne will bring them to the next meeting.
Location For Next Awareness Day: Members discussed possible
location in Norton on Plain Street for Awareness Day. There
is a spot to put canoes in the water by the bridge. The location
is also near the Norton Wells. It was suggested that Wayne
contact the Norton Water Department to see if they would hold
an open house that day. In addition, Wheaton College should
be asked to participate in the program. A site inspection will
be conducted before next meeting. During that meeting, the
Awareness Day Program will be discussed.
Adopt -A -Stream -Shoreline Survey: Joan Kimball from the
Department of Fisheries, Wildlife & Environmental Law
Enforcement's Adopt -A -Stream Program spoke to us about doing
a shoreline survey. A shoreline survey is by foot or canoe,
Page 2 Minutes, August 3, 1995
where volunteers go out with data sheets, camera's, and maps
and observe the shoreline along the river for sources on non -
point pollution, erosion, natural areas, species, trails, etc.
The Committee voted unanimously to approve a Canoe River
Shoreline Project. CRAAC would facilitate the project, and
Joan Kimball would conduct the two hour training session for
volunteers. Joan and Wayne will draft a letter which would
be sent to all the intermediate and high schools in the area
as well as to Stonehill College and Wheaton College to see if
students and teachers would be interested in doing a survey
of the Canoe River. The letter will be reviewed at our next
meeting. From a time perspective, it was decided to do the
workshop and survey in the spring. Hopefully the survey will
be completed in time for the Canoe River Awareness Day.
10th Anniversary Goals: Ed Tartufo said that the shoreline
survey would fit in nicely with our goal to locate areas along
the Canoe River for trails. It was decided to discuss CRAAC's
goals more fully at our next meeting.
Old Business: Ed said that there may be a hang up in the funding
mechanism in repairing the Mill Pond Dam in Mansfield. The
Committee voted to authorize correspondence to be sent to Trudy
Coxe to get an update on the Mill Pond situation.
New Business: Wayne passed around a booklet of wildflowers
that Philip Barske did for the Hydraulic Company Public Water
Supply. He also passed around literature that was sent to CRAAC
since last meeting.
Wayne talked about the Easton Edison's Right of Way project
where the company selectively applies herbicides and cuts
vegetation along the power lines. Peter Simpson from Easton
Edison would like to meet with CRAAC to talk about this. Wayne
will invite him to attend our next meeting.
Next meeting will be in Mansfield.
Meeting adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
