II. REVIEW MINUTES OF February ,1, 1996 - On a motion made by Leonard Flynn and
seconded by Robert Jones VOTED to accept the minutes of February 1, 1996.
III. GRANT PROGRAM - LEONARD FLYNN
Mr. Flynn reported on the status of the project to acquire lands to develop a greenbelt along the
Canoe River as follows: the towns of Mansfield and Norton are where the major acquisitions would
have to be made; 70% of one side of the Canoe River is publicly awned; 42.2% of both sides is
publicly owned; in Mansfield there is a total of nine land owners with two major holders; this
project is a significant undertaking; need to consider a minimum of 150' to allow us to apply for
grants; need to establish what the purpose for such acquisition is; the CRAAC needs to approach
this in a unified manner with the support of each Conservation Commission and Board of
Selectmen; a cost analysis should be done; biggest part of project is public awareness.
Mr. Southworth suggested approaching the water divisions in each ,community as they might be
able to come up with matching funds when applying for the ALA grants.
Mr. Jones inquired should we be assuming the overall width is 300', 150' each side form the center
line of river.
The letter dated 02-27-96 sent by the CRAAC to each community regarding a,greenbelt along the
Canoe River should be followed up. David Risch noted that the Foxborough Conservation
Commission owns approximately 600 acres along the river.
Suggestion was made that the base map (large composite - Assessor's Map of Canoe River
Watershed) should be reproduced for each community to use at such public events as Canoe River
Awareness Day.
This items to be placed on the next agenda.
IV. ROB HURST- CRAAC VIDEO PRESENTATION UPDATE
Mr. Southworth reported that Rob Hurst has completed the school portion of this project which he
then proceeds to play for the committee. Mr. Hurst would like to have some one do a voice over;
stills wants to do a flyover of the whole river; and. is looking to spent more time with us on this.
CRAAC -2- March 7, 1996
V. SHORELINE SURVEY UPDATE
Mr. Southworth reported that a tentative date of April 10th at 7:30 PM has been set up with Joan
Kimball of the Adopt -A -Stream program to do training for the shoreline survey. For that evening,
CRAAC will have to have maps ready with known access points (John Fresh and Tim Higgins to
work on maps).
There is a commitment of 12 to 15 people who will attend the workshop and then do the survey
about two weeks later. The participants will come back with a report on Awareness Day.
It was the consensus of opinion to secure this date for the program with Stonehill College and to
clarify that Ms. Kimball, or her intern, will be on the day of the survey.
VI. ANNUAL CANOE RIVER AWARENESS DAY
The date will be May 1 Ith and will be held in conjunction with the Norton Water Department.
Communications were reviewed.
Meeting adjourned at 2:30 PM.
