Review Minutes of November 2, 2000 -Minutes unanimously accepted. 111. Mill Pond Dam, Mansfield - Bob Jones explained that an engineering firm has been hired to develop plans and specifications for putting a bid out for this project. The dam was rebuilt in 1954. W. Southworth said that the project is now back in the pipeline and that the next step is to see the cost. This item will be kept on the agenda for next month: Pat Rogers of the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs added that he did receive correspondence regarding the Mill Pond Dam. He will review and address this matter after completion of his watershed signage project. IV. Update on DEM Grant - Pat Rogers stated that the DEM grant has not gone out to bid yet. A number of the scopes of work that were submitted were not sufficient. These scopes were sent back for revision and returned. The entire package is being resubmitted as a group. P. Rogers added that the Scope of Work for this grant has been approved and signed. P. Rogers will invite Gerard Kennedy of the Department of Agriculture to the CRAAC's meeting when the grant is presented, P. Rogers will also attend. W. Southworth said that he was contacted by Videographer Rob Hirst who said that he would be available to work on this project, if needed. P. Rogers said that the Taunton River Watershed website is up and running. He took the liberty of putting some information about the Canoe River Aquifer on this site, and has included W. Southworth's e-mail address. Additions and improvements to this site can be made. P. Rogers brought three copies of environmental projects done by high school and junior high students in conjunction with the Bridgewater State College Watershed Access Lab. He noted the high quality of these projects and suggested that this group contact local schools to start a project. He also explained that the sign project is done through the local technical school. The signs are designed by the students and include a logo and the name of the watershed. Bob Durand was enthused about the signs and felt that they should be all over the state. B. Hardin felt that these signs would be great for the Canoe River Aquifer and might deter illegal dumping: The local community can decide appropriate locations for these signs. P. Rogers said he would be willing to contact Southeast Regional Technical School to see if students would be willing to P. Garrett will provide Jenn Carlino with any information he has regarding use of the same water source for a sand and gravel well above a bedrock well. Phase II of a bedrock well project is both a preliminary and a detailed geophysical, survey. Phase III is the drilling phase; : A gix-inch hole 600 feet deep was drilled in Whitman at.a goif.00urse, ,,, Casing is grouted into,,the bedrock down lo,the.surface and fifteen feet into,. it. Phase IV is the pumping test, and Phase Vis wellhead protection.. Iron and manganese can be present bedrock wells. Radon, can also be more of a problem than with sand and gravel wells. VII. Recognition Event - Annual Awareness Day - Fred Watson reported that Ann's Place will not be available for the event. Water's Edge is big enough but does not have enough parking. Bob Jones will check to see if the Canoe River Campground will be available. This event will be formal with presentations and dedications. Refreshments will be included, but there will be no meal. Bob Durand has been sent a letter inviting him to come. VIII. Lawn Care Seminar - W. Southworth said Dana Incessi of Irrigation Design Services would be available to speak at this year's Lawn Care Seminar. He did not think that he would charge for this. D. Incessi is the President of the National Lawn Care Association and he does not think that most systems are installed properly. L. Flynn expressed concern that a water group would appear to be promoting sprinkler use. Emphasis should be placed on educating the public that water is a finite supply and an invaluable resource. D. Masciarelli said that the sprinklers are already out there and he would like to see that they are used properly. W. Southworth said that this speaker has the same message and is not promoting sprinkler use. B. Boette agreed that sprinklers are already there and if they are being used, the most efficient system should be installed. B. Boette motioned to have Dana Incessi speak at the Lawn Care Seminar. D. Masciarelli seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Fred Watson will check on availability of the Norton High Auditorium for this seminar. The target dates will be either Thursday March 29, 2001 or Friday March 30, 2001. IX. New Business - Jenn Carlino said that the DEP's Circuit Rider Program is in jeopardy. This program allows commissions to contact them for educational seminars, to do regular updates and other projects. She said that she drafted a few letters of support for Boards to review. If they are, so inclined, they could then send a letter to their State Representative expressing support for continuing the program. The next meeting of the CRAAC will take place on January 4, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. in the Norton Library. X. Meeting Adjourned - W. Southworth accepted a motion to adjourn the meeting. D. Masciarelli seconded the motion. The Committee voted unanimously to adjourn its meeting. The meeting adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
