Mr. Steven MacCaffrie, 236 Mill Street made this comment: This additional money
should go back to the citizens of the Town, as it is the direction of the Town to be as
frugal as they possibly can.
ROBINSON SCHOOL PROJECT:
Mr. Ron Ashton, architect gave an overview of the school project. The following items
were discussed and direction was given.
MBC Minutes 3-25-97
1. Remove rungs in manhole
i 2. Specifications — verification from JT Callahan on completed set
3. School nurse layout review will be submitted
4. Sketches for sink drawings have been submitted to Contractor - there is ample
casework to hide the plumbing piping - pricing will be submitted by JT Callahan
5. Possibility of relocation of a stove to the faculty dining room - The architect will do
pricing:
6. Layout of the library - wants minor alternations to the design of the circulation desk.
The committee stated that these changes would result in extra charges. No action was
taken
7. Water proofing has not been identified for the cavity wall installation. This was not
included in the specifications. The architect would like to ask for a (CCA) bid proposal
for the cost of including this in the project. The waterproofing product would be applied
with a trowel - spraying is not recommended. The architect will prepare a calculation on
this application.
8, Names of furnishings providers will be forwarded to the Committee
9. RFI - 007 Sagamore and TCI have reviewed pricing and an agreement has not been
reached on pricing, credits and scope of work.
10. CCA- #2 -abatement work- $4,709.08 lump sum, includes all testing, Bids must be
obtained for the actual removal, boiler room, sped rooms, and unit cost attachment is
included. The test results would be available within the necessary time frame. If the test
results are not in then the rooms cannot be used.
MOTION: To approve CCA #2 for $4,709.08 (Liddick/Young 3-0-0)
11. CCA #3 - excavating and removal of unsuitable materials -$46.00 a ton.' There is
approximately' 1991.96 yards of stone
MOTION: To approve CCA #3(Young/Liddick 3-0-0)
12. Roofing bids came in at an amount higher than was allocated in the allowance. The
committee asked what went wrong. The architect stated that independent estimators were
hired to do the calculations -they were off by approximately 35%.' Additional quotes are
being solicited. Member Young asked Mr. MacCaffrie to forward letters and comments
from roofers on why they wouldn't bid the job. Discussion on the type of snow guards
and installation pattern occurred between the committee, contractor and architect. The
Committee asked if snow guards were necessary on this roof. Snow usually idoesn't slide
off an asphalt -shingled roof. Mr. MacCaffrie has a problem with change orders that
would be issued with the clause stating "not to exceed this amount". This delay also puts
the roof work and closure on this project a month behind.' Electrical and insulation work
cannot be performed unless this building is weather tight.' The architect would like to
discuss further reductions with Titan Roofing, Mr. MacCaffrie stated that this is causing
a level of frustration because the job was going well and would like to know exactly how
Tong it will take to resolve this problem. Member Liddick stated that the architect has not
given the committee enough information. The architect stated that all the bids are within
2% of each other. Member Young and Liddick stated that they would like snow guards
to be installed on the perimeter of all sloped roofs - Member Feeley stated that he feels
that this expense isnot necessary as the roof is already overpriced. The Committee asked
about green roofing to coordinate with the Jordan/Jackson elementary school project.
MBC Minutes 3-25-97 3
13. Proposed Changes 9 - 13 - the Committee reviewed the various proposals and made
comments - these items. Mr. Parker is reviewing these proposals.
14. The Brick - existing brick seems to be in various sizes, the bricks that were delivered
were beyond the acceptable tolerance. The color cannot be matched because the existing
brick is no longer manufactured. Member Young stated that he does not like the color
that was selected. There was concern expressed over the tie in with the existing
brickwork. The only direct connection is with the back two classrooms, the courses will
coordinate. Member Young stated that he would like the committee to have the
opportunity to view the selections for colors of window colors, brick work, interior color
selection. Member Young asked if the windows would be aluminum. The architect stated
that the color of the windows would be mill finish aluminum. The architect has been
trying to coordinate colors with the existing work. The doors will be metal with lots of
glass. Member Young stated that he wanted the doors to be "Mansfield Green". The
architect will submit the exterior metals package. Mr. Ashton has asked the Committee to
review the brick color that is on site. The architect will have the brick supplier verify that
this is the closest color brick available.
15. Shop drawing status list'—the Committee stated that this should be submitted
monthly with the requisition. The architect will forward the submittal list to the
Committee. The architect stated that Callahan has submitted a significant number. The
Committee expressed concern over the items that must be installed over the summer.
Some submittals have been returned to the contractor because they submittal didn't match
the drawings.
16. Door hardware: The architect will review this and he believes that many ;ofthe
existing closures cannot be modified to meet the present code. Much of the hardware can
have retrofits made to accommodate ADA codes.
17. Elevator: Callahan will go forward with quotes for the elevator. The architect will
bring this up at the next construction meeting. The phone installation must be included.
POLICE STATION:
The bid date was extended one week. The old system for the HVAC system was included
in the bid specs. An addendum containing 125 pages was distributed to all plan holders.
One sub contractor expressed concern that there was insufficient time for review.
