QUALTERS MIDDLE SCHOOL UPDATE
Translucent Panels: Discussion re: use of a Calwall System vs. a Major Industries
product. Dan Freeman had expressed previous concern with the panels delaminating.
David Lucrkut, PACE gave a presentation indicating that their product exceeds the
performance data specified for QMS. Mr. Lucrkut distributed a hand out outlining
product performance criteria and applicable warranties.
Failure rate — Question was raised re: problems with de -lamination of Major
Industries translucent panels during the mid eighties. Mr. Lucrkut noted that new
technologies had eliminated the problem. Rich Feeley questioned the validity of lab
tests vs. a product subjected to actual conditions. Dan Freeman confirmed that during
his recent visit to a Coast Guard site at Otis A.N.G. on Cape Cod, that the Major
Industries product showed no visual signs of de -lamination. Product was installed in
1992. Mr. Freeman stated that based on the information that was provided, the
product offered by Major Industries could be used at QMS. Rich Feeley expressed
his support with using the Major Industries product based on the site report by Dan
Freeman.
• Finish — Discussion re: white finish indicated vs. clear anodized aluminum. Dan
Freeman noted that white is much harder to keep clean. Major Industries proposed a
gray acrylic paint finish that would include a 10 year warranty (covers chipping,
chalking. fading etc.) at no additional cost.
• Mannix product — Jim Doepke noted that the windows have factory interior glaze on
backside for added strength. David Lucrkut demonstrated how easily panels could be
replaced.
Warranty issues - Rich Feeley asked about the procedure to resolve unexpected
problem issues. Mr. Lucrkut responded that any problems should be reported to
PACE for evaluation. They will investigate and in turn forwarded request to the
manufacturer to fulfill warranty. Jim Doepke, National Sales Manager noted that
Major Industries would check the installation of panels before, during and after
installation.
Supplier/installer - Mr. Lucrkut commented that they have worked with Cheviot
Corp. (installer) and is comfortable that the product would be installed properly.
Larry Wilcox Cheviot Corp. (Sub contractor-QMS) commented that he has reviewed
the product information with Keyes. Mr. Wilcox noted that in his opinion, Major
Industries' product has a better thermal break. Good value for the money.
• Estimated delivery -Jim Doepke noted that the lead time is currently 8-10 weeks (6-8
weeks for panels only). Rich Feeley emphasized that timing is critical. Shop
drawings are needed from Keyes before panels can be ordered.
• MBC Chairman stated that a decision will be made based on the receipt of a written
recommendation from Keyes to accept the product as submitted.

drawing process, but was overruled by the A/E.
3. J.T. Callahan proceeded with the work based on a directive from
the Architect/Engineer.

the contractor's requests are prioritized. Rich Feeley noted that the number of days (14)
allowed to respond has been exceeded in many cases. Dan Freeman will request that

Fire Alarms - Repeated Fire Alarms were reported going off this week. Discussion re:
dust setting off fire alarms at QMS. Steve MacCaffrie noted that Zone 5 & 8 were taken
out of service while working in those areas. Contractor had asked that zone not be
restored until head replaced. Walter Parker noted that he was unaware of that situation.
One of the school staff had put service back on before they were done. Everything is back
on line. J.T. Callahan to have alarm units cleaned.

re: increased heating costs at QMS. Mr. Parker alluded that the SMI weather tight issues
