KEEP MANSFIELD BEAUTIFUL
Welcome & Call to Order
Motion to accept minutes from previous meeting
Meeting called to order at 7:05
Minutes accepted from previous meeting and signed by Pat Colbert
Treasurers report - Mike
See Google Docs for details, but netted $5,600 from Fundraising effort, which is the
second highest net.
Cost of flower barrel program continues to increase for the following reasons: cost of
flowers increasing, additional plantings of spring pansies, more participants (90 barrels
this year), and no increase in price since program was implemented in 2010.
Existing jongoing Projects
Storage Rental - Nancy and Neil
Nancy looked into a storage rental to house all of our materials. The old Animal Shelter
has a shed that we could use.
Neil said there is an office above Advantage Appliance that is $400 a month to rent. This
might be a place for Keep Massachusetts Beautiful to rent once enough money is raised.
Neil has cleaned out a part of his garage to store all the Keep Mansfield Beautiful
materials so no action on a storage rental at this time.
Flower barrels - Pat and Nancy
The spring pansies were a huge success! The weather was perfect growing weather for
these plants.
The summer wave petunias will be going in next week. We will be removing the pansies
on June 15th and planting on June 16th. Mike Healey will be helping us with the removal,
flower pickup, and plantings.
Adopt a Spot - Martha
The Mansfield Green Girl Scout Troop will be handing over the spot to a younger troop.
As part of this ceremony, they will be dedicating the site to Cheryl Collins, who was
instrumental in getting DPW to properly prepare this site for the first troop. Cheryl
worked with DPW to fix the drainage, build up the area with soil, and remove the poison
ivy. This dedication is June 10th at 2:00 at the Mansfield Green. All are welcome to
attend.
Painted barrels - Pat
• The Adult Center completed one of the two barrels. It is a solar system barrel and was
placed at the South Common. The Adult Center is finishing up on their last barrel, which
is a Candy Land theme. Pat plans on placing this new barrel at the Library to replace the
older painted barrel that is there.
• A new painted barrel was placed at Fultons Pond (green and purple stripes with trash
cans on the stripes - very cute!) and replaced a green DPW barrel.
• The Girl Scout troop who is now maintaining the Mansfield Green has completed their
new barrel and it will be placed at the site as part of the ceremony on June 10th.
• Jeffs daughter will be painting her barrel as part of her birthday party!
• Mike Healey said his wife might paint a barrel.
Litter sign program- Jeff and Neil
The final design of the anti -litter signs was done by Karen Reardon and approved by the
Committee.
10 Anti -litter signs were placed on Spring Street (at Dean's street intersection). As part
of this effort, the site was first cleaned up. Ten pounds of trash was picked up. This
included 42 Sutter Home nip bottles, plus several other nips. Neil emailed the Mansfield
Police explaining out effort and requesting they keep an eye out for this area. The
results of this effort will be highlighted at the end of one month when we will go back to
clean up the area and determine if the signs had an impact.
School Programs - Milkweed and recycle education
Martha will report on the Milkweed program at the next meeting.
Neil continues to work with the schools on recycling programs.
Family Fun Night (Tuesday July 11) - Pat,
• We have plenty of t -shirts available from the cleanup.
• We have car trash bags to give out.
• Our flyers will be available.
• Kristi Johnson will be painting another barrel for us. This years barrel will be happy
face's with the statement "We are happy to Keep Mansfield Beautiful".
• Neil is going to order more reusable shopping bags (with our logo on it) to sell at the
event.
• We will offer the ring toss game and also "pick up your trash" game using a grabber.
Candy will be a prize.
• Pat will send out an email requesting hours that need to be covered throughout the
event.
New Programs/ Ideas
Clean up with supermarkets- Mike Healey
• Mike will head up this project to work with businesses to guarantee that their property
management companies are properly maintaining the area. In other words, that the
service provider is honoring their contact. Mike will start with Stop & Shop since he
already has a relationship with them. Other businesses we discussed that need to
improve their locations are: National Lumber, Erin's Corner, and Downtown businesses.
• Mike approach will be to use positive reinforcement -reward them for good work and
publically praise them for their efforts.
Possible collaboration with the Garden Club on some garden areas - Nancy
• Once the Garden Club decides which sites they will no longer maintain, we will place
them on our Adopt -a -Spot availability list.
Recycle Day - Neil
• Neil is going to contact Lee to see if we can have the Recycling Center open on both
Saturday and Sunday on a weekend in the fall to coincide with Keep America Beautiful's
nation-wide Recycling Day.
• We are viewing this as a way to further expand awareness of our Recycling Center and
might have a banner made to advertise this event.
• We would like to offer the textile day with Saver's collecting the clothing and giving us
some proceeds from the effort.
• We would also like to see if we could collect furniture.
Veteran's markers -Martha
• No news to report.
On/off ramp spring cleaning - Jason
• We need to fill out the paper work in order for us to clean up the Route 140 area. Once
this is done, we will come up with an action plan on how to handle this area.
Notice Board near police station - Nancy
• No news to report
Keep Massachusetts Beautiful - Neil
• We have 24 new grabbers from Keep America Beautiful
• Neil reported that 53 communities in Massachusetts are planning to remove plastic
bags.
• Neil still plans on running the campaign against Dunkin Donut Styrofoam cups.
• Many new communities are interesting in creating organizations. They are Cape Cod,
Barnstable, Hyde Park, and Boston. Boston has a LoveYourBlock program, but they are
interested in extending it to a Keep Boston Beautiful committee.
• Neil is going to receive a donation from the Kraft organization. 25 organizations were
selected to win up to $25,000. Congratulations Neil!
• Neil continues to run events at companies to promote recycling and litter prevention.
He recently worked with the Dell employees to clean an area. In 3 hours they picked up
60 bags of trash.
