3. Visitors:
6:15 -Vanessa Marascio and Stephen Zenack from National Honor Society gave a project
update on the purchasing of a bench to be put in Memorial Park. They found a 4ft.
bench on Wayfair that is made from recycled materials. When given color options,
Ed Westhaver thought green would show less algae and dirt. Sherri said that when it
comes in, the DPW will install it. Mitch asked if they had the money already, and
Vanessa said they raised it through bottle drives.
Motion: By Ed Westhaver to support the NHS bench donation to Memorial Park.
Seconded by Kevin Kemp. Motion passes, 4-0
6:30 -Jen MacDonald came to discuss renovating the Memorial Park football field. She
provided a handout of those renovations which included fixing the press box, fixing the
bleachers and getting a new scoreboard. She has volunteer contractors who are willing
to do the work. She may need financial help in purchasing the materials. Kevin Kemp
mentioned a scoreboard company in town that may donate or lower the cost of a new
scoreboard. Ed Westhaver said that banks may donate one too. Kevin asked about the
field accounts the Parks and Recreation has and if money from that could be used to
support this work. Kevin stated that the first step that Pop Warner needs to do is meet
with Mark Cook and let him know what they want to do. Mark is good at helping
organize and even will help in doing the work. Ed Westhaver said that he would be
available to act as a representative from the board throughout the process.
Motion: By Kevin Kemp that the Recreation Commission support, in principle, the
proposal by Pop Warner with Sherri Gurnon facilitating meetings between
Pop Warner and Mark Cook to explore the next steps and potential funding.
Seconded by Linda McCabe. Motion passes, 4-0.
6:45 -Jen Monis and Megan Crotty of the Friends of Memorial Park came to update the
Commission on the final playground plans. They brought in a rendering of the
playground and explained the placement of different items on the playground. They
informed the Commission that the old equipment has been removed and the grading has
started to prep the site. The projected date of installation is the first week of May with
an opening on Mother's Day (May 14). They are planning a ribbon cutting ceremony
and would like some or all of the Recreation Commission to attend.
7:00 -Anthony Krouskos and his father, John Krouskos, brought in Anthony's Eagle Scout
Project idea. Anthony wants to clear brush and overgrowth and repair the sides of the
Mill Pond Dam's two bridges. He will take off the old wood boards and replace them
new boards. Sherri asked if he is doing any fundraising. Anthony said that he is asking
friends and family to make small donations and maybe do a "Go Fund Me" page if the
council agrees to that. Kevin asked how long he thought it would take. Anthony
replied that he is using 4 Saturdays and has plenty of volunteers. Briggs Nursery is
donating stone dust for the pathways.
