KEEP MANSFIELD BEAUTIFUL
Welcome & Call to Order: 7:00 (Nancy)
Motion to accept minutes from previous meeting
• Minutes were accepted.
Treasurer's report 7:10 (Mike)
• $12,471.36 in the account.
• $457.00 for 6 new pole barrels.
• Currently, we raised more funds this year than last year; however, it is still on
the low end in terms of years past.
• For the Cleanup, we cleared about $3,000, with $1700 in expenses.
• We received a $250.00 gift card to Home Depot from Toyota.
Clean-up 7:15
Wrap-up- Good job everyone!
Bags from Otis Street fields were not picked up.
Neil suggested ways to improve the Cleanup for next year. He would like each
Precinct leader to do the following:
• A report stating what routes were assigned.
• Names of the people that did not show up.
• Follow upon all sites assigned to make sure they were actually done.
• The amount of trash and recycling bags used.
• Guarantee we ask each person if they want to work alone or with a larger
group before assigning locations.
Because there are sometimes conflicts with cleaning up on Saturday, an idea for
next year is to offer a two day cleanup on both Saturday and Sunday.
Jason reported that his area is difficult because he has many no-shows and
young children. We might need to re -think how to handle Precinct 6 for next
year.
Erik reported there was a problem with his T-shirt order since he ordered one
for himself and his son online, but did not receive one from his Precinct leader.
Pat stated there was an issue with the cutting and pasting done to produce the
Precinct Captain's Excel spreadsheets. This will be double checked next year
before sending out to the Precinct Captains.
What to do with grabbers, gloves, extra bags.
• Each Precinct leader will keep the grabbers for next year.
• Please return un -used recycle bags to Nancy so she can return to Unity Center.
• Keep any extra trash bags for Litter Busters, etc.
Existing Projects (7:45) Everyone
Pole barrels - Nancy
• 6 new barrels have been ordered.
Flower barrels - Nancy, Pat
• We want to replace the oak flower barrels with the plastic barrels. Pat and
Nancy saw nice plastic barrels at Home Depot for $20.00. They are the same
ones Nancy purchased last year for the smaller side walk areas. They are slightly
smaller, but look nice and easier to manage.
• Pat has approached Patrick Lyons to buy back the oak barrels for 20.00 each. As
of this writing, Patrick Lyons had responded they are not interested in
purchasing back the barrels.
• Patrick Lyons reported the dark pink wave petunias will be available for planting
either the first or second week in June. The weather has delayed some of the
flower growth. Pat will check with Patrick Lyons in a couple of weeks to finalize
the date.
• Nancy wants to check out the oak barrels at the DPW site on Fruit Street to see
how the oak barrels would handle having no soil. On Thursday, May 19th at
7:00 we are meeting at the site to look at the barrels and to decide what we want
to do moving forward. All are welcome to attend.
Adopt -s -Spot - Martha
• The QMS sign looks beautiful and the QMS students will be maintaining the area.
• At the time of the meeting, QMS reported that they did not want a trash barrel
because of the associated maintenance (emptying it, etc.). However, as of this
writing, it looks like this decision might be changed and we will be able to have a
barrel painted. Martha is following up on this.
• The garden at the QMS bike rack will not be a Memorial Garden, but a Peace
Garden. The area is currently dug up and the students will be planting shortly.
Martha has been collecting plants for the students. Martha would like the area
mulched after the planting. She will ask Flint Farm to provide mulch at a
reduced cost.
• There is no news about the J/J sign. The pear tree went to Fultons Pond and it
looks great.
• The Beauty Queen's site needs weeding. Martha will be sending out a generic
email to all the Adopt -a -Sport participants requesting their spots be cleaned up
and ready for spring plantings.
Painted barrels - Pat
• Pat will be picking up the barrel from the Adult Center next week. She will send
along pictures.
Litter Busters - Jeff
• June 25th is the next Litter Busters outing.
• As we approach the date, we will determine the area to be cleaned up.
Depending on the amount of people, we could clean multiple areas.
• Jeff will advertise the event as "An hour of your time'. We all lilted this slogan
and hoping it will attract participation since we are not asking for a huge
commitment.
• A woman named Rachel, contacted Nancy and was very interested in starting a
litter busters program for kids. She was in Jason's precinct and he talked with
her about this. She was enthusiastic about helping out. We are hoping she will
participate in the cleanup on June 25th and we can discuss her ideas at that time.
Off ramps & Adopt a Highway - Neil
• The on/off ramps have been cleaned up.
Family Fun Night - Pat
Family Fun Night is Tuesday, July 120, rain or shine.
We discussed various painted barrel ideas. Pat originally thought of a "flower
power" barrel with bright colored flowers painted all over it and the slogan "We
have the power to Keep Mansfield Beautiful". People would sign their name like
last year. The other idea was having people place their thumb print on the
barrel and have a slogan like "Thumbs up to Keep Mansfield Beautiful". Pat will
follow up with Kristi to see what she recommends.
We will sell/provide the remaining Cleanup T-shirts.
We will have a ring toss game - toss the ring on a recycled bottle game.
106 embankment flowers and maintenance
The 106 embankment needs weeding and replacement flowers. Since this is
Guerrini's Adopt -a -Spot, Martha was going to follow up via an email.
New Programs
Inventory of unnecessary signs
• This was not discussed.
Route 140 Trees - Erik
• Erik has been working on the "Complete Streets" proposal. This is part of an
initiative that trees are proven to slow down traffic.
• Erik has looked at all the maintenance aspects. It is extremely important how it
is laid out. This will be done in a phased approach because the area is large.
His design has flowering trees at the intersection and shade trees for the other
areas. It is crucial that this plan includes the right type of trees that are durable
and hardy. Erik stated that crab trees are an excellent fit. He also included
other types of trees in his proposal.
• Erik said this will be a tough sell because of maintenance and liability issues
(hitting trees, etc.), but with perseverance, he is very confident that it will be
approved.
• Erik estimates this is an 18 month project.
• Erik will be submitting his proposal to district 5, Taunton.
• The South Eastern Planning and Economic Development District (SRPEDD) is
meeting on Tuesday, May 24th from 4:00 - 7:00 at Mansfield's Library. Erik
plans to attend the meeting to listen to what they are planning to do and to
present his proposal. For more information, see SRPEDD.org.
