The Director, Janet Campbell, was also present. Joe convened the meeting at 8:15 a.m. in the Certuse Room of the Mansfield Public Library. Secretary's report. The minutes of the January meeting were not yet available. Treasurer's report. Chris presented the treasurer's report which was approved. Correspondence. Recent correspondence was reviewed. Librarian's report. Janet highlighted her monthly report and various issues were discussed. Library usage. Janet reported on several unusual issues relating to use of the library including an apparent theft of materials which triggered the alarm and resulted in pursuit (unsuccessful) by a staff member. There was also a recent problem with a group of unruly high . school girls using the internet who threatened other young. The police were summoned and the problem was not repeated. The board discussed increasing from 15 to 18 the minimum age for internet use without a parent's written permission. Kitty has reported daily library use by a group of children about I 1 years old who appear to have been told to stay at the library by parents who are presumably working. PC support from SAILS For $400 +$50 per PC, SAILS will support all of the library's SAILS PCs. Support will include on site maintenance, replacement computers during repairs, hardware upgrades, software maintenance and upgrades, as well as security systems on each computer. The library owns 14 such machines so the cost would total $1,100. The board approved implementation of the service commencing in July. (The service does not include internet computers.] Chapter- a- day(on -line book club 1 Janet reported correspondence indicating enthusiastic support for the new service. DVD's. The library has started purchasing DVDs. Janet has withheld about half the collection because they are R rated. The board approved shelving, noting that the adult oriented material in the library is similarly accessible and may be borrowed by any card holder without restriction. Phone lines. The Town will be installing new phone lines and the library must provide space for equipment in a secure area. The only apparently acceptable space is the electrical room/storage closet, and the equipment would take up half the room. Since loss of that space. would cause problems, the board asked Janet to investigate the possibility of using the attic as an alternative. OLD BUSINESS ADA workstations. Joe reported that he has the chassis for the workstations and anticipates they will be complete and operational by April 1. Wheelchair accessibility. Janet reported that $7,000 remains in the building account and recommended that at some point the board consider using those funds for a new automatic access door. Budget 2003. Janet's first budget meeting with the Town Manager is scheduled for Monday, February 4. Grants. At a recent grant workshop Janet learned that, pursuant to the Childrens' Internet Protection Act, the federal government will not pay for any material that has any connection with internet accessibility unless all internet computers in a library are filtered. Since our adult computers are not filtered, we will be unable to use any federal grant funds for ancillary materials to use with the ADA workstations as we had previously intended. Accordingly, Janet recommended using our own funds to make the ADA workstations wheelchair accessible. NEW BUSINESS Next meeting. March 9, 2002. The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 a.m.
