BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING - MARCH 7, 2009
Attendance: Nancy Breef -Pilz; Chris Cormier- Hayes, Leonard Epstein, Joe Flynn and
Director Janet Campbell. John Walgreen was attending the annual Massachusetts Library Trustees
Association meeting in Boxborough. Joe convened the meeting at 8:20 a.m: `
Secretary's report. Minutes of the February meeting were reviewed and approved.
Treasurer's report. The treasurer's report was reviewed and approved.
Librarian's reports. The librarian's reports were reviewed and details discussed.
OLD BUSINESS
Weeding. Janet discussed ongoing weeding efforts, including SEMLS' assistance program
available to libraries. Virtually all new shelf space added over the last year in now full.
FY 2010 budget. Janet has had no further meetings with the Town Manager or FinCom. A
5% budget reduction is still the likely outcome.
Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act. Janet reported no further developments in
the new "lead law" which could, if left unmodified, result in closing of all childrens' rooms in
libraries pending an extensive inspection and testing program. Implementation of the new
( regulations has been stayed until February 2010.
Tong ren healing. The board approved a request to present a program and demonstration
on March 17,subject to the usual non - commercial stipulations.
Media drop. Janet will investigate the feasibility of adding padding to one of the existing
outside book drops in order to accept electronic media (DVDs, recorded books, etc.)
NEw BUSINESS
DVD cases. The board approved Janet's recommendation to eliminate security cases from
non - fiction DVDs. They are time consuming, expensive and always in short supply.
Norton decertification. As expected, because of Norton's massive drop in funding, the
Norton Library was decertified effective February 13.
Newspapers. Effective March 9 the Providence Journal will cease deliveries to this area, so
library patrons will no longer have what was a valuable source of employment information for job
seekers.
Next meeting. April 4, 2009. The meeting was adjourned at 10:10 a.m.
