Librarian's reports. The librarian's reports were reviewed and details discussed. The board discussed the library's ongoing staffing difficulties arising from the hiring freeze which prevents the replacement of Kristin. The two substitutes now on call are doing well, but remain somewhat limited by lack of training and experience. Janet continues to work extra hours to help with the staffing shortages. Correspondence. Significant correspondence was reviewed including a thank you note from a family with a child in day care in Mansfield and for whom a local library card would be especially helpful. There was also a thank you note for Janet's recent talk at SEMLS at which she discussed MPL's Community Read experience with Three Cups of Tea. Janet also reported the library's receipt of BLC certification as well as a $2,575 grant for programs to assist patrons seeking employment. The grant, funded by Tournament Players Choice, is through the Town's Non -Profit Gift Fund Committee and resulted from an application by Mary Tynan. OLD BUSINESS Weeding. The required 5% reduction is basically made up of Kristin's position and a reduction in materials acquisitions. NEW BUSINESS Book cart. The library needs a new book cart and Janet prefers a wooden to go with the new shelving. If purchased from the library's vendors the cost would be about $7001 Janet speculated about commissioning the Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School to build one and Joe offered other suggestions for less expensive possibilities. Pawsox pass. The Friends have purchased a pass ($200). It covers a family of up to six people for $18 and is available for most home games, excluding only a few exclusions e.g. July 4. MEG funds for books. Janet is concerned that the $30,000 two year reduction in our materials budget may be problematic. The board approved the use of MEG funds for book purchases if necessary.
