The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. Present were
David Loving, Pat Cataloni, Jean Nordbeck, and Kate Viens.
Minutes of the May 5, 1991 meeting were approved.
Old Business
The commission decided to table discussion of the Fisher -
Richardson House National Register nomination until the next
meeting, when Barbara Orlando can be present. At David's
request Kate will call SPNEA to inquire about the
commission's ability to obtain copies of letters between
Jennie Copeland and William Sumner Appleton.
Kate reported that she is about half finished with the
nomination for the Soldiers' Memorial Library. She also
suggested that the commission make sure the town - -the
building's owner - -is aware that the nomination is being
prepared. David agreed that the selectmen and town manager
should know of the nomination, and members agreed to draft a
letter to them at a future meeting.
Members discussed the condition of house plaques. They
agreed that since the letters used on them appeared to be in
good shape, and since the deterioration of the numbers
seemed to be an isolated occurrence limited to one plaque,
no further action was necessary.
Pat reported that the vacancies on the commission have been
advertised on local cable TV for the past 1 112 -2 weeks.
She suggested that we ask the town manager about advertising
in the Mansfield News.
Kate reported that Judy Scott was on vacation and
unavailable to discuss the issue of four appointments all
ending in the same year.
Members agreed to table elections until the next meeting
when Barbara -- and possibly new members -- can be present.

Jean explained that Park Row School holds strong memories
for many residents who attended high school there. She
suggested that the commission sponsor a project to mark its
closing, perhaps an open house during a summer band concert
or a different event with the Jaycees. Jean will call Laura
Lee and invite her to the next meeting. Kate will check the
building's history at the library.
Other suggestions for events included: a call for old
photographs, a class reunion on the common, a booklet of
reminiscences by alumni, and a joint project with current
high school students. Jean will call Diane Royal and Dr.
Warren to find out their plans for closing the building.
Members saw no adverse effects of East Mansfield sewer
construction across the Canoe River at Mill Street.
Members discussed the commission's goals. Jean noted that
the school system is educating students about Mansfield
history at the same time that it brings different age groups
together through curriculum enrichment. She suggested that
newcomers to town be a target of our efforts. Pat remarked
that this group, in particular, doesn't know of our
existence and that in general, raising the public's
awareness of the commission should be a priority.
Members decided that Park Row would
efforts this year and tabled further
the house plaques project.
