MANSFIELD IIISTORICAL COMMISSION
Historical Commission Meeting
March 37, 1992
MINUTES
l'A /s t
Office at:
50 West St.
Mansfield, Ma. 02048
The meeting was called to order at 7:?5 p.m. Present were
Jean Nordbeck, Pat Cataloni, Geanine Parks, Wayne Jacques,
and Kate viens.
Kate reported on projects area historical commissions are
involved in, including publishing town histories, organizing
exhibitions, and accessioning their collections on computer.
Members discussed fundraising. According to a past town
manager, the commission is prohibited from selling goods or
otherwise raising money. It was decided to ask the-present
town manager at some point in the future if this holds true,
however, since area historical commissions are actively
engaged in fundraising. Members asked if money raised would
go into a separate historical commission account or if it
would be put into a general account for use by other town
committees.
Park Row School Celebration:
Jean reported that she received permission from the School
Department Building Manager to use Park Row without a
custodian from 77 a.m. - 2 p.m. on May 30th. She will also
get permission to use the building on the following day, as
a rain date.
Althea Sankey of the CON will get the names, addresses, and
phone numbers of 5 -8 volunteers who will station themselves
around the school when it is open. Geanine will contact
them and arrange transportation. Geanine will take charge
of any memorabilia Althea locates, and she'll make yearbooks
available. Members decided that pictures could go up on
posters and that artifacts could be displayed in cases on
the first floor of the school. Pat suggested that there be
sign -up sheets next to the yearbooks so that class members
can register. Wayne suggested that the third graders'
"yearbooks" could also be featured, to recognize more recent
students.
Wayne will research the history of Park Row in the library,
and members decided David Loving could look up any history
that resides with the Historical Society.
Kate will take care of publicity, contacting both the
Mansfield News and the Sun Chronicle to place the event in
their calendar of events, to ask them to publish the
building's survey information, and to put out a call for
reminiscences and mementoes. Members decided that Barbara
Orlando could take phone calls about mementoes. Kate will
also memo the Board of Selectmen and the Town Manager about
March 31, 1992 Historical Commission meeting minutes,
continued...
Members prepared a form for writing down reminiscences which
Geanine will bring to the COA. Pat and Jean will work with
students in the lower grades to ask for reminiscences from
their families.
Members decided a presence will be needed on the common to
direct people to the school. Wayne suggested that the
school's alumni could man a booth on the common if no
historical commission members are available. Jean will try
to get the students to make a green and white sign for a
table, and Geanine will call Laura Lee to get permission to
use space on the common.
Other business:
Geanine moved, Kate seconded, and members voted to ask
Barbara to contact the Conservation Commission about the
possibility of their holding a meeting for any interested
parties about Lego World, since Kate saw in the Mansfield
News that the Conservation Commission drafted a letter to
that effect. Members agreed that it is premature for the
Historical Commission even to discuss forming a position on
the project, but that engaging in fact - finding discussions
would be beneficial.
The meeting adjourned at 9:10 p.m.
