MANSFIELD HISTORICAL COMMISSION MINUTES
for August 29, 1995 at 7:30 PM
Present: Pat Cataloni, Chris Marion (Assistant Town Manager), Gean Parks, Leslie Pasch
and Kate Viens.
The May minutes were approved as recorded on a motion from Jean and 2nd from Pat. All
in favor.
Correspondence was reviewed:
1. A flyer from the Museum of Our National Heritage in Lexington a display workshop.
Kate reported that she received a draft of the state historical preservation plan.
Comments were requested but we received the plan too late to do so. A check for the
grant for the Fisher - Richardson house will arrive soon and will be placed in an account for
the Historical Commission only. Claire will submit an invoice to the Commission which
will be paid from these funds: Claire has her work schedule completed and would like to
meet with us at our September meeting to discuss it. The meeting will begin at 7 pm on
September 26 with an invitation to the Mansfield Historical Society.
Kate pointed out recent newspaper articles on the Fisher - Richardson House and
Memorial Hall. She sent a letter to Lois Thomas thanking her for her support. Lee White
has spoken to Pat about some material she has on the Fisher - Richardson genealogy that
may be of help to us. Kate will speak to her. Helena Havey will try to provide some
Welman family info as well. Jean will pass on some of her notes on the first town meeting
from town records to Claire. Lorilee Fish reports that the exterminator is still scheduled
to visit the Fisher - Richardson House and Kate will call the DPW to block the doors before
the cold weather.
Kate will call Wayne Jacques for the information he has on the Aztec statues in front of
Memorial Hall. Doliver Spaulding received the statues as payment for work done in
Mexico and the Municiple Building Committee has no definite plans for them. Pat and
others expressed concern that they be properly handled during the upcoming construction.
Kate will write to the MBC with a copy to the architects on the matter.
Kate, Pat and Leslie reported on the final plans for connecting Memorial Hall and the
Park Row School/New Town Hall. Since no state or federal dollars are being used, the
Commission has no power to compell changes to be made. Leslie added that the MBC
was struggling with cutting costs and had rejected the initial architectural plan because
they felt it did not adequately preserve the architecture of Memorial Hall.
Jean reported on the Gravesite Restoration Project. Sweet Cemetary is completed and
Morton/Mormon still has to be done. East Mansfield will be a very big job and a grant
would be helpful. Perhaps college students or Eagle Scouts could get involved. Jean
stressed that accuracy is very important. The vacancy on the Commission has been posted
on cable. Kate received a call about a possible archaelogical site off Stearns Ave where
property is being developed. She said we have no authority to enter private property and
more information is needed before an investigation on our part.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:05 pm on a motion from Jean, 2nd from Pat.
All in favor.
Respectfully submitted,
