MANSFIELD HISTORICAL COMMISSION MINUTES
for September 26, 1995 at 7 PM
Present: Pat Cataloni, Claire Dempsey, David Loving, Jean Nordbeck; Gean Parks, Leslie
Pasch, Charlotte Scozzafava and Kate Viens and members of the Mansfield Historical
Society.
Claire Dempsey reviewed her work schedule for the Bay State Historical League grant
through November. She will be looking at primary records on the Fisher - Richardson
house and comparing them to the narratives of Jennie Copeland. She has conducted a
search at the Bristol County Court House and is working backwards in time. She has
visited the public library and will focus the project on documentary research. Jean has a F-
R cemetary survey Claire may borrow. A bill for $750 has been paid from the grant funds.
The physical state of the house was discussed. DPW will close it up for the winter. Claire
stressed the need to protect textiles and paper items in particular. The pest control was
performed 3 years ago and animals may be getting into the building.
David Young, chairperson of the Municiple Building Committee, has responded to our
letter expressing concern about the Aztec sculptures near Memorial Hall. His letter states
that the statues are not within the scope of the project and if they are to be moved the
commission will have to do so itself. Minxy Fannin will look at the statues and do a quick
assessment of their condition and how to conserve them. Kate has Wayne Jacques' info as
well.

The minutes of the August 29, 1995 meeting were approved as recorded. Kate
reported that the Attleboro Falls House Tour will take place on Oct. 8 with a cost of
$12.50 per person. There is a meeting on Oct. 4 at the Congregational Church to
organize volunteers for the tours.
Kate looked at plans for the Williams St. Bridge and they will widen and straighten the
road, increasing the amount and speed of traffic. One Planning Board meeting has taken
place concerning the scenic road bylaw. The Board is eager to hear about historical or
archaelogical sights in the area. After checking our files, Kate found a survey of a former
knife factory. After discussion, it was decided to report our findings in writing to Shawn
and the Planning Board with a copy to the Massachusetts Historical Commission,
including a copy of the survey . David moved and Jean seconded. All in favor. The letter
will state our interest in seeing the site preserved and/or documented. Leslie will call
Shawn about notices for future meetings of the Planning Board and she will xerox them
and send them out to each commission member as they arrive.
Our next meeting date is Halloween. It was decided to meet on October 24 instead.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 pm on a motion from Jean, 2nd from David.
All in favor.
Respectfully submitted,
Leslie A. Pasch
