MANSFIELD HISTORICAL COMMISSION MINUTES
for February 25, 1997 at 7:00 PM at Town Hall
Present: Pat Cataloni, David Loving, Gean Parks, Leslie Pasch, Charlotte
Scozzafava and Kate Viens.
The Chairperson, Kate Viens, presided. Minutes from the January 21, 1997
meeting were approved. Approved on a motion from Gean, seconded by Pat, all in
favor.
Correspondence
1. Letter to Gean Parks from Mass Historical Commission
2. Letter to Gean Parks from Pilgrim Society
3. Memo from Town Manager on Town Hall open house
4. Tobacco Control Program flyer on Daffodil Days
Kate sent a letter to the Mass Historical Commission inquiring about potential
National Register eligibility of the Clemmey Tank Building.
Gean moved and Pat seconded that the following slate of officers be nominated
for 1997:
Kate Viens -- President
David Loving- -Vice President
Leslie Pasch--Secretary/Treasurer
All in favor.
Kate reported that the Finance Committee wants to cut the cemetery restoration
project from the town budget in FY'98. Lorilee Fish, the head of Parks and
Recreation, has written aletter of support and Leslie wrote one from the
Commission. Kate will call the Town Manager about the matter and contact Lois
Thomas from the Mansfield Historical Society for their support. It was decided
not to write letters to the newspapers at this time.
- Boston University has contacted Gean about their grant project to document
houses built before 1720. They asked her to contact the owners of four Mansfield
homes for them. After discussion, David moved to have Gean make introductions
and BU make the appointments. Seconded by Leslie. Four in favor and 2
opposed.
David expressed concern about rebuilding Fulton Pond Dam. It has been given
high priority by the Capital Improvements Plan at the Town Engineer's urging.
David feels this is unnecessary as there is little danger of real damage from
flooding if it breaks. The Town plans to cut dawn trees at the dam and rebuild the
sluiceway. After discussion, it was decided to have David create a historical
survey.
The Fisher - Richardson tour script was discussed including whether to include
the traditional belief that the house was the site of the first organizational meeting
for what later became Mansfield. The Commission will work on 1 to 2 rooms per
meeting through the spring to complete the tour script. The script for the dining
room was completed. Kate will send each member a copy before the next
meeting.
Pat stated that the town was considering the gas house behind Memorial Hall as
a designated smoking area for Town Hall employees. The gas house is part of a
National Register structure and is not appropriate for this use. Kate will write a
letter to the Town Manager.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:40 pm. David moved, Gean seconded. All in
favor.
Respectfully submitted,
