Mrs. Parks read a letter from the Colonial Dames, to whom she gave a tour of the Fisher -
Richardson House over the summer. Enclosed was a 1913 article from the Granite
Monthly regarding the bell in the Congregational Church.
September 22, 2004 letter from Betsy Friedberg, Mass Historic re: receipt of
National Register application. Due to staff shortages and funding problems at the
state level, it could take up to two years to complete the full application. The
commission discussed writing our state reps to ask for their assistance.
1. May 17, [sic] 2004 letter from Philip Bergen, Mass Historic re: National
Register inquiry — Hartwell School
The commission looked at the inventory form for the school with an eye toward sending
a preliminary application to MassHistoric for the National Register. The inventory
includes the construction date and builder, and if we can come up with additional
information to add to the inventory, it would help the application. The commission
discussed checking with the Mansfield News, Kevin McNatt, neighborhood residents,
Martha Flint, Mansfield Room in the library, as well as taking some photographs of the
school and looking online at the state archives and for something like a historical schools
society.
Ms. Davis will contact Kevin McNatt to ask if he has any Hartwell information, and ask
him to get in touch with George Yelle to see if knows where anything else might be.
Mrs. Parks will do some research at the library and Mr. Martin will do some online
research. The commission will invite Martha Flint and Mr. McNatt to come to our
November meeting, record the meeting.
Mrs. Shaw said a plumber has visited the school, and said without insulation and
windows, they wouldn't be able to turn the water on over the winter. He suggested
electric heaters, since the building isn't used all the time. He also suggested replacing the
copper piping with pvc, which would be less expensive.
Mr. D'Agostino explained the plan for the Boston Post Cane program and asked if the
commission would be interested in participating in the program. He said some
communities keep the cane on display in Town Hall and give the recipient a pin to keep.
He asked the commission to draft some rules and regulations for the program. The
commission said it would like to participate.
