MANSFIELD SCHOOLS PROJECT
Temporary High School Improvements - Walter Parker met with the Committee this evening to
provide a status update regarding installation of modular classrooms at Mansfield High School.
Project Scope of Work - The scope of the proposed project includes design and installation of (4)
four portable classroom units, landscaping, and student lockers. The additional classrooms will
be attached to the front left corner of Mansfield High School. The work will not impede the
emergency fire access /walkway between Qualter's Middle School and the High School.
Bollards will be installed along the walkway to protect modular units. To address esthetic
concerns in having the modular units located in the front of the building, each unit will have a
brick facade and skirting to grade of remaining sides.
Project Clerk — Walter Parker, Building & Grounds Manager will oversee day -to -day
construction activity for the project. Walter Parker asked the Municipal Building Committee to
serve in an advisory capacity for the project. MBC members agreed.
Bid Phase — The School Dept held a General Bid opening for 4 modular classrooms and
associated work March 20, 2008. Seven (7) bidders responded. Walter Parker was asked to
provide a copy of Bid Tab sheet to MBC. Vanguard of Danvers, MA is determined to be the low
bidder with a bid of $625,000. Walter Parker reported that the Town has prior experience
working with this company and is satisfied with the quality of their work. The original cost
estimate for this project was $750,000.
Change Order #1 -The Fire Department requires that afire rated door be installed at the
vestibule exit. This item was not included on the original bid plans and will be an added cost.
Walter Parker noted that installation of sprinkler system is not required.
Fundine -The School Department is currently using a prior balance of $50,000 remaining in a
prior high school re- design account to offset KBA design expenses.
Annual Town Meeting voted favorably on May 20, 2008 to include this project on a Proposition
21/2 ballot election scheduled July 15, 2008. Ayes vote on July 15`s would allow the School
Dept. to obtain a bond for the amount needed to complete the project under a debt exclusion.
MBC members commented that should the vote not pass favorably, the School Dept. may need
to halt construction activity due to lack of funding.
Walter Parker added that because of the critical need for space, the School Dept. and Finance
Committee were supportive of moving forward with the classroom project as much as possible
until funding is approved. School Dept. will use operational funds to offset some costs, and
hopes to recover the monies used assuming the project is approved.
Proiect Schedule - The School Department is rapidly moving forward with the construction
phase of the project during the summer months, in order to have all units installed and ready for
occupancy in time for the opening of school by September 2008.
