Old Business:
Aftersehool Music Update:
Superintendent, Brenda Hodges updated the School Committee on the afterschool music program.
The program has been well attended with 38 students participating. In the Orchestra Program there
are 15 students attending in the 2:30 — 3:30 PM classes and 15 in the 3:30 — 4:30 PM. We have also
8 students that practice from 4:45 to 5:30 PM.. we offered to help with afterschool care. Out of the
38 students we have 22 students that stay for afterschool care, with no cost to the parents. Mr. Dan
D'Ambrosia is the band instructor for grades 5 & 6 only. There are 71 students involved in this
program. Out of those 71 students, 35 of them stay in the afterschool program at no cost.
MHS Backpack Update:
Dr. Maruszczak updated the Committee regarding the implementation of the refined policy
regarding the backpacks and book bags at the high school. The policy dictates that students do not
have backpacks while transitioning to classes in the hallways or in the classrooms. This policy is
needed due to safety concerns of the crowded hallways and larger class sizes. There have been
only three students that have been referred to the administration due to non - compliance, but overall
students are complying with the policy.
Superintendent's Evaluation Template:
School Committee Chairman, Mr. Michael Trowbridge, motioned for a vote to approve the
Superintendent's Evaluation Template.

New Business:
MS Overnieht Field TriD to Ouebec:
The School Committee requested more information regarding the QMS overnight trip to Quebec. I1
has been the past policy that only high school students have gone on overnight trips. Committee
member, Mr. Jim Perry, stated that there should be more chaperones with an 8 -1 ratio and a
stipulation that they must all stay in groups. Mi. DelVecchio asked about the range of cost for each
student. Mr. Trowbridge had reservations as well as Mrs. Miller. These concerns centered around
needing more information before setting up such a large trip. Mrs. Kerri Sankey, Assistant
Principal of the QMS, said that she would make sure that more information would be sent to the
Committee for their next meeting. The Committee will wait for more information before making a
final decision concerning the overnight trip.
QMS Field Trip to New York:
QMS teachers, Ms. Smith and Mrs. Martinelli, requested permission to bring 50 students from the
7`" & 8°i grade on a first come basis, to New York for the King Tut Exhibit that is currently being
held at the Discovery Center near Times Square. There will be 5 chaperones for the 50 students.
The Committee approved the request for the one day trip.
Motioned to approve by Mrs. Jean Miller, 2 "d by Mr. Jim Perry

Roland Green Report Cards:
Ms. Joanne Jordan, Co- Principal of the Robinson and the Roland Green Schools, presented the
School Committee with the new Report Card that will be used twice a year for the children at
Roland Green. The Committee was pleased and moved forward to approve.
Motioned to approve by Mr. Jim Perry, 2 °a by Mr. Frank DelVecchio.
Motion U.C. 4 — 0
District Performance Data Presentation:
The Superintendent presented the School Committee with the FY'09 MCAS & Student
Performance Data. The overall performance data shows that there is a decline. For the first time,
the SPED Subgroup at the high school did not make AYP. Both ELA and Mathematics scores
showed a slight decline. The scores at the QMS and the Jordan Jackson remained basically flat or
declined. It is important to note that the grade 3 scores in Reading and Mathematics showed a
marked increase, which is consistent with the district's projections of the Scott Foresman Literacy
Program having a positive impact on student learning and achievement.

The SAT's were lower in comparison to the state scores with drops in Critical Reading, Writing and
Mathematics. Mrs. Hodges will review the AYP and CPI data in relation to the district schools in
restructuring the Jordan Jackson and Qualter's Middle School . The Superintendent will bring
forward and address the plan regarding restructuring at the next School Committee Meeting.
Mrs. Hodges wanted all to understand her message that we now have data to support her concern of
the impact of decreased staffing and increased class sizes. The Superintendent has previously stated
that when the community begins to see the changes, it will be too late to reverse the impact. This
decline will steadily continue unless there is an immediate shift in the approach to delivering
educational services to the children.
Citizens Comments:
Ms. Nancy Madonna spoke to the fact that she felt that there should be more Professional
Development for the teachers. Ms Madonna asked how we can support the schools and that there
seemed to be a correlation between the larger classroom sizes.
Ms. Marry Barton Rau wanted to know when the combined meeting of the town and schools would
be taking place regarding the budget. Ms. Rau felt that possibly it would be helpful to have another
group to look at the budget and go over it.
Ms. Keira O'Neil asked the Committee for their thoughts on the MCAS results and if they met their
expectations and were satisfied with them. Ms. O'Neil was concerned and stated that something
had to be done. Mrs. Hodges let the audience know that she was disappointed with these results
and that we have a problem that must be addressed as we move forward.
Ms.Nancy Brief Pilz asked for an update on the Qualter's Middle School Principal Search. Mrs.
Hodges provided the upcoming timeline for the selection of the principal.
Mr. Wayne Smith asked when the Executive Session Minutes would be released.
