Motioned by Mrs. Lisa Losiewicz, 2 "d by Mr. Jim Perry. Motion U.C. 3 — 0 OLD BUSINESS FY' 12 Budaet Discussion / UDdate: Superintendent Hodges began the discussion updating the Committee on the protocol that was followed with the administrators. The largest item Mrs. Hodges looked at was the Special Education portion of the budget. The Superintendent asked SPED Director, Ms. Bernadette Conroy, along with Ms. Janet Denzer and Ms. Nancy Beier to go through and streamline the SPED cases and find reductions that could be made without compromising the cases and remain in compliance with the DOE. Ms. Conroy spoke to the Committee regarding that process. Ultimately, they changed and moved the responsibilities at the Robinson, spread case loads out, which actually offset the caseloads and then added a Para to stay within compliance. Ms. Conroy stated that she was taking what was a teacher and two Para's at the Robinson and now having only 2 half time Para's and doing the same set up at the QMS. Mrs. Hodges stated that what is reflected in the budget is the higher number for Para's. At the middle school we have 12 more students with intensive needs going to 9 i grade, so we needed a new teacher to equalize some of the teaching loads. We found that the part time Para's have worked well, which also saves on offering benefits. The changes made were reducing 3 SPED teachers and going from 7 Para's to 6. The SPED changes decreased the budget by $135,000. Mrs. Hodges thanked Ms. Conroy and her staff for all their help. A motion to accept the budget changes made by Mr. Michael Trowbridge, 2nd by Mr. Jim Perry. Motion U.C. 3 — 0 Approval of Service Animal Policy: Superintendent Brenda Hodges explained that there is now a mandated policy by the Federal Government to allow Service Animals including other animals, not just dogs, in all buildings. The most used animal is still the dog but the next one is actually small horses. These animals are being trained and used more frequently now. A motion was made to waive the first reading of the policy and to accept this policy by Mrs. Losiewicz, 2 "d by Mr. Jim Perry. Motion U.C. 3 — 0 SCM Page 3 Field Trip Approvals: None CITIZENS COMMENTS Iv1r. Wayne Smith wanted an explanation as to why the meeting was held at the high school and why it wasn't posted last week. It was explained to Mr. Smith that the room was already booked. Ms. Friedman wanted to know how realistic it was that we would have any new positions. Mrs. Hodges noted that we really won't know until later on when the budget was settled. Ms. Baldwin wanted to know if the Committee had a plan B in case the monies don't come through. Mr. Trowbridge noted that they are working within the budget. Ms. Baldwin then asked if there was any more stimulus money coming and Mr. Trowbridge stated that they had rolled the money over into next year's budget.
