The Animal Welfare Committee met September 25 at the Town Hdi;` ik= rftembers were present
which established a quorum. Also attending the meeting were shelter volunteers Suzanne
Berry, Tara DeVeau, Rose Wool, Laura Peebles and Dr. Denise Trapani. Minutes from the
previous meeting were approved.
• Balances for the AWC financial account were presented: spay- neuter $345; general
$9,257.75; new shelter $42,911.94. The total balance is $52,514.69. A total of $216.81 was
collected from donation cans. There are no outstanding invoices for medical care.
• Matt Miller will check with the Board of Selectmen's office to see if Geanine Parks has formally
resigned. To date, the AWC has not received any formal notice.
• St. Mary's church will have a blessing of the animals on October 4. The AWC will try to have
someone attend to pass out literature and say a few words about the shelter.
• Three dog cages were broken into and the dogs were set loose sometime last Saturday
evening (Sept. 20). The police were called and a formal report was filed. This follows the
disappearance of a dog on September 12. Several options were discussed to help prevent this
from happening again: installation of motion - detector lighting, installation of a secondary fence
around the dog pens, and requesting that the police patrol the area. The Committee voted to
authorize up to $300 towards the installation of motion detection lighting and Dick Davenport will
talk with the appropriate Town officials. Dick also will obtain an estimate for the extra fencing.
• Medical care for four cats was discussed at length. All of the cats were deemed adoptable by
Dr. Trapani, but they each require medical attention or further evaluation. The Committee voted
to authorize funds for all four from the money collected in cans at area businesses.
• The Committee also approved a report and related activity by David Cass from his meeting
with the Town Charter Committee.
• Action on selecting a date in early May for
December.
The next meeting has been set for October
