AI three members were present to establish a quorum. Also attending the meeting were Mansfield resident Rita Parvey; shelter volunteers Suzanne Berry, Tara DeVeau, Connie DeVeau and Nancy Kovar; and Assistant Town Manager Christopher Marion. We began our meeting with a review of recent correspondence: Chris Marion's 9/21 memo to Chief O'Neill offering to work with the AWC was unanimously accepted; a letter from the Mansfield Women of Today indicated that nearly $900 was raised from Family Pet Day and would be donated to the AWC for a new shelter (the AWC also received $161.18 in cash donations at the event); Judith Scott's 9/13 memo resolved the residency issue regarding membership on the Committee, while the second question regarding authority on animal euthanasia was left unanswered. Two other items: a 9/26 request by Linda Sohn to Chief O'Neill for reimbursement of emergency care for a cat at the shelter; and a 10/10 memo from Mr. Marion requesting a scheduled meeting with the Chief and funding to refurbish a donated van for the Animal Humane Officer's use. Ms. Parks and Mr. Marion will set up a meeting with the Chief to recover the AWC financial account. They also will attempt to resolve the outstanding financial issues and requests. The Committee voted not to make any financial commitments until the account is recovered. The volunteers suggested several items that needed attention at the shelter: better external lighting, hot water (no oil delivery) and repairs to a broken screen door. We discussed ramifications of the 9/15 letter from Chief O'Neill to Jeff Collins regarding the removal of animals for the purpose of spaying or neutering animals. Because of the lengthy meeting, we did not have the opportunity to discuss goals and issues as planned. We will develop these goals and a list of issues prior to the next meeting and finalize them at that meeting. We set Thursday, November 9, at 7:30 p.m. (Town Hall) as the next Committee meeting.
