The Animal Welfare Committee met on March 28 at the Town Hall. Five of the seven
members were present to establish a quorum. Also attending the meeting were shelter
volunteer Tara DeVeau, and Mansfield resident David Cass.
The Committee reviewed the minutes of the previous meeting and approved them.
• One deposit of $775 was made into the AWC financial account in March 28 from adoption
and donations to the shelter during the January to March time period. The spay /neuter
account now totals $220, the general funds account totals $1,115.02 and the new shelter
fund account totals $28,909.03. The AWC total account balance is $30,244.05.
• On behalf of the AWC, Geanine Parks attended the March 6 Board of Selectmen meeting
and presented the Committee's annual report. This report, which was favorably received by
the Board, was discussed. The Board inquired about where we could build a new shelter
and if dog licensing money could be applied to the AWC account to help fund a new shelter
— both items were discussed in detail and will be acted upon at a later date. Board member
Frank Collela noted that this was the best Town committee presentation he has ever seen.
• Dog euthanasia was again discussed because of the ongoing lack of space for dogs at the
shelter. Fortunately, one dog was adopted and another was picked up by its owner which
relieved the situation. There was general Committee agreement that we must step -up our
publicity efforts in order to get more dogs adopted.
• A work party was established for April 6 to clean a vacant room which will be used as a cat
isolation area and for volunteer office space. The heating system was fixed in the dog room
and a security light installed outside the front door.
• Because a dog was recently adopted out that tested positive for heart worm, Chairman
Miller was asked to instruct Humane Officer Collins to have all of the eligible dogs at the
shelter tested for heart worm. Since the Town will not pay for heart worm testing, this testing
will be paid for by the AWC out of adoption funds.
• Sub - committee activity and areas of responsibility were discussed with no further action
taken. A suggestion was made to develop and refine a monthly animal activity report that will
be used to keep an ongoing account of all activity at the shelter. This sample report was to
be reviewed by Mr. Collins and the active volunteers at the shelter before implementation.
• Chairman Miller agreed to alert the media about the April 6 birthday party at the shelter for
a Norton girl who asked her friends to bring presents for the animals and not for her. This
was done and resulted in a front -page story (Sun Chronicle) and other publicity.
We set Thursday, April 25, 1996, at 7:30 p.m. (Town Hall) as the next Committee meeting.
Respectfully submitted,
Matt Miller
