The Animal Welfare Committee met on May 30 at the Town Hall. Four of the seven members were
present to establish a quorum. Also attending the meeting were shelter volunteers Tara DeVeau, Connie
DeVeau, David Cass and Dick Davenport.
The Committee reviewed the minutes of the previous meeting and approved them.
• A total of $1,406.41 was recently deposited. The spay /neuter account now totals $320, the general
funds account totals $2,022.62 and the new shelter fund account totals $29,235.44. The AWC total
account balance is $31,578.06. Of the funds deposited, $625 came from shelter operations, $100 was a
Great Woods donation, $181.41 was from the Petco "Adopt a Pet" program, and $500 was from the
Mansfield Recreation Department and Commission for medical care of the shelter animals.
• Activities related to the June 1 Flea Market and other fund - raising activities were discussed. Tara
DeVeau will reactivate the Petco "Adopt a Pet" program for the shelter.
• The Committee voted to approve payment to the Mansfield Animal Hospital in the amount of $245.80
for heart worm, testing and medication. The Committee voted to reimburse Linda Bissonnette $300, which
is part of the cost she encountered for the heart worm treatments for her newly adopted dog — which
was found to be infected after adoption. Payment for a PatriotLedgerinvolce for $69.96 for flea market
advertising was also approved.
• Animal medical care was discussed and the consensus is that the shelter would be best served if we
could develop a system of volunteer vets who would visit the shelter on a rotating basis and keep
updated medical charts for each animal. This would ensure that we are adopting out healthy animals and
allow us to provide the new owners with the pet's medical records.
• The volunteers reported that one of the dogs at the shelter attacked a puppy and was showing signs
of nervousness from being penned in. The general conclusion was that the dog should be euthanized If
Jeff Collins agreed. They also reported that the neighbors at the entrance road to the shelter were using
that road as a private parking lot when having parties. The neighbors argued that the gate should remain
open so that they could park cars on the access road. One person suggested that they had their own
key from a Town worker and would open the gate when everyone left. Via this report, we are passing
this information along to Chief O'Neill.
We set Thursday, June 27, 1996, at 7:30 p.m. (Town Hall) as the next Committee meeting.
