Members Not Present: Rita Parvey
The Animal Welfare Committee met on June 27, 1996 at the Town
Hall. Six of the seven members were present to establish a
quorum. Also attending the meeting was David Cass, shelter
volunteers Tara DeVeau, Connie DeVeau, Suzanne Berry, Dick
Davenport and new volunteer veterinarian Dr. Denise Trapani.
The committee reviewed the minutes of the previous meeting and
approved them.
• Election of Officers was discussed. At the same time,
discussion of committee member Rita Parvey's status was
mentioned. She has been unable to attend the last few
meetings because of medical problems. We could supplement
the existing committee with 1 or 2 more members. The
decision on this will be held off until next meeting.
• A thank -you letter was written to the Recreation Department
for their donation of $500. A letter of thanks was also
written to Mr. Bruce Montgomery at Great Woods for a $100
donation as well as Mr. Patrick Furnari for a new door for
the shelter. Connie DeVeau was also thanked for all her
efforts regarding the flea market.
• Shelter issues brought up were as follows:
-> Posting heartworm schedules on board for Jeff Collins;
-> No new adoption forms completed yet;
-> Tara read the new Petco program and it is no longer
a coupon program like it's former company - Pet Supply
Depot;
-> Cats need bigger cages. Cost is around $150 each cage.
Denise Trapani brought up "Purrrfect Cat Shelter" in
Millis. They have a large closed -in area for several
cats to live in and suggested we do the same. Contact
Kathy Haber for further information. Geanine will
speak to Val Beatty on cat housing and if we can get
a discount for bigger cages;

-> Dick Davenport will make a list of what needs to be
done in back room to make it functional for cats and
the costs of each job.
® New Business / Shelter Issues were discussed as follows:
-> Dr. Trapani's proposal was discussed and approved
unanimously by all. She stated she is available
7 days per week /24 hours per day. Jeff asked Dr. Sohn
if he would like to offer a proposal as well. Dr. Sohn
said he is too busy to do it although his "vet techs"
may be interested;
-> In case of an emergency, though, Jeff would take
animals to Dr. Sohn but Dr. Sohn isn't always
available;
-> It was mentioned that no needles should be kept at the
shelter because it is not a secure facility but Dr.
Trapani stated that syringes can be kept under lock
and key and vaccines can be kept in a refrigerator.
Vaccines are considered non - narcotic. Regular vaccines
should be given to animals and medical records should
go with adopted pets;
-> Medical records /progress reports on each of the
animals, i.e., water intake, stool examination, etc.,
will be done on a daily basis. Forms will be
typed by Dr. Trapani;
-> Nutro Max cat and dog food will be donated to
the shelter on a monthly basis;
Next meeting is set for July 25, 1996 at 7:30 pm at the Mansfield
Town Hall.
Respectfully submitted,
Matt Miller
