The Animal Welfare Committee met November 14 at the Town Hall. Four of the five members
were present to establish a quorum. Also attending the meeting were shelter volunteers Dick
Davenport, Mindy Sullivan and David Cass.
The Committee reviewed the minutes of the 9/26 and 10/17 meetings and approved them.
• Exact figures for the AWC account were not available, but estimates of the balances were
presented — spay- neuter = $349; general = $7,670.74; new shelter = $34,754.75. The total
balance is about $42,774.
• Paying for the increased medical care invoices was discussed. Matt Miller explained that
he was told by the Town Manager's office that when the invoice total approaches about $500,
a purchase order should be drawn up, signed, and used to expedite payment.
• Two issues at the shelter were raised: one was replacing the front door which is falling off
its hinges; this could be a safety hazard to volunteers and general public and should be
acted upon immediately. The other item was adding additional street lights to the long
entrance roadway where dogs are now walked in the dark. Both of these items will be raised
with Chief O'Neill via this committee report.
• Meeting space at Town Hail was discussed and Matt read a letter sent to Judy Scott.
• Animal euthanasia was discussed related to the treatment of heart worm — should the dog
be put to sleep of should the AWC pay for the expensive treatment. The revision of the
shelter operating guidelines and Town by -laws should address this and other similar issues.
• The AWC will participate with the Downtown Merchants Assn. and take pictures of Santa at
the new parking lot near Shepherd's Florist. The dates run from December 7 — 14.
We set December 12, at 7:30 p.m. (Town Hall) as the next Committee meeting.
Respectfully yssubmitted,
Matt Miller
