The Animal Welfare Committee met February 20 at the Town Hall. Five of the seven
members were present to establish a quorum. Also attending the meeting were Dr. Denise
Trapani and Serena Langton.
The Committee reviewed the minutes of the previous (1/23) meeting and approved them.
• Balances for the AWC financial account were presented: spay- neuter $389; general
$8,142; new shelter $36,743. The total balance is $45,275. Geanine Parks reported that
$182 was raised during the month from donation cans at Mansfield -area businesses. One
outstanding invoice for medical care remains.
• The need to establish a non - profit entity that will support the shelter was discussed at
length. The Chairman and David Cass will complete and file the necessary paperwork as
quickly as possible. Also discussed was the possibility of the non - profit entity contracting
shelter care services to the Town.
• Work has been completed in the new cat room. The sink has been installed and the entire
room has been painted. Four new cat cages have been donated by the Red Dog Inn. Paint
was donated by Mansfield Hardware.
• Shelter cats will be moved to the new room at noon on Saturday, March 1. Local media will
be advised of the event. The old cat room will serve as an isolation area for all new cats
received at the shelter.
• Activities for the proposed May 3 -4 pet "Adopt- a -Thon" were discussed. The Chairman will
contact the Town Manager for help in determining a suitable location for this event.
• The Chairman presented revised 1996 shelter activity figures for AWC review. This
information will be presented to Chief O'Neill and then to the Board of Selectmen.
We set March 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the Town Hall as the next Committee meeting.
