HomeMy WebLinkAboutAnimal Welfare Minutes 3/20/1997The Animal Welfare Committee met March 20 at the Town Hall. Five of the seven members were present to establish a quorum. Also attending the meeting were Tara DeVeau and Suzanne Berry. The Committee reviewed the minutes of the previous (2/20) meeting and approved them. • Balances for the AWC financial account were presented: spay - neuter $409; general $8,199.71; new shelter $36,743.29. The total balance is $45,352. There are no outstanding invoices for medical care. • Paperwork is being finalized to establish a non - profit entity that will support the shelter. The completed forms will be filed with the State as quickly as possible. • Mansfield resident Gertrude M. Libbey, who died on February 9, will be donating through her trust, $5,000 towards a new shelter. • A suggestion was made to purchase two additional cat cages for the new cat room so that the older, smaller cages could be used in the old room as back -up cages. Since the AWC has already voted to spend the money, new cages will be ordered in the near future. • Chairman Miller was officially notified by Chief O'Neill on March 24 that both Cornell and Tufts provided negative responses to his inquiry about housing multiple cats together in a "kitty city" arrangement. According to the Chief, there is a concern about the transfer of disease and, therefore, he will not permit this multiple housing at the shelter. • Activities for the proposed May 3 "Adopt- a -Thon" were discussed. The South Common has been reserved and other arrangement are being finalized. Proposed activities include: animals available for adoption, a rabies clinic, dog licensing, a grooming booth, tattoo and micro - chipping, vendor displays, information booths and fund - raising activities. Surrounding towns and organizations will be invited to include their shelter animals. The AWC voted to spend up to $200 for prizes for school children, and up to $300 for new signage. We set April 24, at 7:30 p.m. at the Town Hall as the next Committee meeting. Respectfully submitted, `46wxx Matt Miller Chairman, Animal Welfare Committee cc: Committee Members Town Clerk, Judith F.
