The Animal Welfare Committee met November 20 at the Town Hall. Five members and two
alternates were present to establish a quorum. Also attending the meeting were volunteers
Suzanne Barry, Rose Wool, Laura Peebles, Tara DeVeau and Mary Johnson.
• Balances for the AWC financial account were presented: spay- neuter $45.00; general
$8,847.80; new shelter $42,911.94. The total balance is $51,804.74. Miscellaneous
expenses were approved for payment.
• Medical condition of three cats was discussed and the AWC approved medical care funding
to resolve the problems. The cats were deemed adoptable.
• There are currently nine dogs at the shelter; promotional activities tying in with Mansfield
businesses was discussed. The goal is sponsored advertising which helps both parties.
• A shelter brochure developed by Rose Wool was reviewed and approved for printing,
following final edits. The Courier Corp. in Stoughton will print; AWC only pays $50 for plate
charge. The brochure will be available at the shelter and other locations around town.
• The Committee approved funding of $2800 for secondary fencing around the dog cages;
;Dick will review with Jeff Collins prior to making a formal commitment with the installer. This
secondary fencing is designed to prevent dog theft and protect visitors from the dogs.
• Pet photos with Santa was discussed for the holiday season, but, with lack of support for a
project chair, the idea was dropped. Several volunteers will explore the fund - raising effort.
• The committee is still waiting for a replacement Animal Shelter sign on the
corner of S. Main and Fruit.
There will be no December AWC meeting. We set January 22, 1998, at 7:30 p.m. at the
Town Hall as the next Committee meeting.
